Arthur Thomas Bate
Arthur Thomas Bate (28 January 1855 – 14 January 1922) was a New Zealand sharebroker, public servant and philatelist. Biography Born in Saint Helier, Jersey on 28 January 1855, Bate was employed as a "lad clerk" in the accountants department of the Great Western Railway at Paddington Station, London from 1872 to 1874. He emigrated to New Zealand in 1874 on the ship ''Langstone'' and settled in Wellington. He was a public servant for 18 years, rising to the rank of ministerial private secretary. In 1893 he went into business on his own account, becoming a land, financial, insurance and general commission agent and sharebroker. He served as chairman of the Wellington Stock Exchange from 1909 for seven years. Outside of business, Bate served as secretary of the Wellington Rugby Football Union and the Wellington Cricket Association and as a member of the New Zealand Rugby Union. The Roll of Distinguished Philatelists (RDP) is a Philately, philatelic award of international scale, created by the Philatelic Congress of Great Britain in 1921. The Roll consists of five pieces of parchment to which the signatories add their names. Selection of the signatories Those who have assisted the development of philately through their research, expertise or giving their time can be candidates to sign the Roll if they are sponsored by one of the existing signatories. Philately (; ) is the study of postage stamps and postal history. It also refers to the collection and appreciation of stamps and other philatelic products. Philately involves more than just stamp collecting or the study of postage; it is possible to be a philatelist without owning any stamps. Karori Cemetery
Karori Cemetery is New Zealand's second largest cemetery, located in the Wellington suburb of Karori. History Karori Cemetery opened in 1891 to address overcrowding at Bolton Street Cemetery. In 1909, it received New Zealand's first crematorium, which is still in use and is Australasia's oldest. Karori Cemetery reached capacity during the 1950s, and Makara Cemetery became Wellington's main burial ground. Burials at Karori happen only in pre-purchased family plots, in children's plots, and in pre-purchased ash plots.
