Arthur Rankin (surveyor)
Arthur Rankin (1816 – March 13, 1893) was a surveyor, entrepreneur, militia officer, and political figure in Canada West. Rankin was born in Montreal in 1816, the son of Irish immigrants. He ran away from home at the age of 15, and became a cabin boy on a New York-to-London packet boat. In 1835, he returned to Canada and apprenticed with his brother, Charles Rankin, to be a surveyor in the Windsor area. In 1837, Rankin moved to Toronto where he received a commission as an ensign for the 2nd Queen's Light Infantry. While on leave in Ohio, Rankin attacked two bounty hunters who had captured an escaped slave from Kentucky. Rankin smuggled the man from Cleveland, Ohio, to Toronto. Rankin transferred to the 2nd Battalion of Provincial Volunteer Militia and, in 1838, took part in the Battle of Windsor, fighting to recapture Pelee Island from the Patriots. Arthur Rankin Jr
Arthur Gardner Rankin Jr. (July 19, 1924 – January 30, 2014) was an American director, producer and writer, who mostly worked in animation. Co-creator of Rankin/Bass Productions with his friend Jules Bass, he created stop-motion animation features such as ''Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer'', ''Frosty the Snowman'', ''Santa Claus Is Comin' to Town'' and the 1977 cartoon special of ''The Hobbit''. He is credited on over 1,000 television programs. Early life Rankin was born in New York City, the son of actors Arthur Rankin and Marian Mansfield. His paternal grandmother was actress Phyllis Rankin, and his paternal step-grandfather, who adopted his father, was actor Harry Davenport, who played Dr. Meade in the film ''Gone with the Wind''. Arthur Rankin (actor)
Arthur Gardner Rankin Sr. (August 30, 1895 – March 23, 1947) was an American film actor. Personal life Arthur Rankin was born in New York, the son of actress Phyllis Rankin. She later married actor Harry Davenport, who adopted Arthur. He was the nephew of Mr. and Mrs. Sidney Drew. Rankin served in the United States Marine Corps during World War I, and received a medical discharge in 1918. He then joined the British Army. During World War II, Rankin rejoined the Marine Corps. Rankin married Marian Mansfield, and they had two sons, one of them being animator Arthur Rankin Jr.. He died on March 22, 1947, of a cerebral hemorrhage.
