Arthur Parfenchikov
Artur Olegovich Parfenchikov (russian: Арту́р Оле́гович Парфе́нчиков; krl, Artur Parfenčikoff, born November 29, 1964) is a Russian politician who since February 2017, has been serving as the Head of the Republic of Karelia, a federal subject of Russia. Parfenchikov was appointed to the post of acting governor after Aleksandr Hudilainen resigned in 2017. Karelians ( krl, karjalaižet, karjalazet, karjalaiset, Finnish: , sv, kareler, karelare, russian: Карелы) are a Finnic ethnic group who are indigenous to the historical region of Karelia, which is today split between Finland and Russia. Karelians living in Russian Karelia are considered a distinct ethnic group closely related to Finnish Karelians, who are considered a subset of Finns. This distinction historically arose from Karelia having been fought over and eventually split between Sweden and Novgorod, resulting in Karelians being under different cultural spheres. In Russia, Karelians mostly live in the Republic of Karelia, where they are the designated ethnic group, and in other adjacent north-western parts of the country. 2017 Karelia Head Election
The 2017 Republic of Karelia head election took place on 10 September 2017, on 2017 Russian regional elections, common election day. Acting Head Artur Parfenchikov was elected for his first full term. It was the first direct Karelia head election in 15 years since Sergey Katanandov won his second term in April 2002. Background Head of Karelia Alexander Khudilainen was appointed in May 2012. On 8 February 2017 reports emerged that Khudilainen wouldn't run for a second term, and on 15 February he announced his resignation.
