Arthur Noel, 4th Earl Of Gainsborough
Arthur Edward Joseph Noel, 4th Earl of Gainsborough OBE TD (30 June 1884 – 27 August 1927) was a British peer. Early life Arthur Noel was the son of Charles Noel, 3rd Earl of Gainsborough and his wife Mary Elizabeth Dease, (her sister was the writer Alice Dease), and a great-great-grandson of King William IV. He succeeded to the earldom on his father's death in 1926. Career In 1903 Viscount Campden was commissioned in the Territorial Army Reserve in the Gloucestershire Regiment and fought in France in the First World War as a major. He was decorated with the Territorial Decoration (TD) and was invested as an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 1919. He was Private Chamberlain to Pope Benedict XV and Pope Pius XI. Charles William Francis Noel, 3rd Earl of Gainsborough DL (20 October 1850 – 17 April 1926) was a British peer and soldier. Early life Charles was born on 20 October 1850. He was the son of Charles Noel, 2nd Earl of Gainsborough, a Member of Parliament for Rutland, and Lady Ida Harriet Augusta, who died in 1867. Among his siblings was Lady Constance, who married Sir Henry Bellingham, 4th Baronet. Earl of Gainsborough is a title that has been created twice, once in the Peerage of England and once in the Peerage of the United Kingdom. The first creation ended in extinction when the sixth Earl died without heirs. However, the title was revived in 1841 for a female-line relative. 1682 creation Baptist Hicks was a wealthy textile merchant in London and also represented Tavistock and Tewkesbury in the House of Commons. In 1627 he was created a baronet, of Campden in the County of Gloucester, with remainder to heirs male of his body. One year later Hicks was raised to the peerage as Baron Hicks, of Ilmington in the County of Warwick, and Viscount Campden, of Campden in the County of Gloucester, with remainder to his son-in-law Edward Noel, husband of his daughter Juliana. William Hay, 17th Earl of Erroll (12 March 1772 – 26 January 1819), known as Lord Hay until 1778, was a Scottish peer. Early life Erroll was the son of James Hay, 15th Earl of Erroll and his second wife, Isabella Carr, the eldest daughter and co-heiress of William Carr of Etal in Northumberland. His elder sister, Lady Augusta Hay (the first wife George Boyle, 4th Earl of Glasgow), succeeded to the Etal estate in 1806. Sir George Grey, 1st Baronet, (10 October 1767 – 3 October 1828) was a British Royal Navy officer and a scion of the noble House of Grey. He served with the Royal Navy from the age of 14 and was on active service from 1781 to 1804, during the latter years of the American War of Independence, the French Revolutionary War and the Napoleonic War. Sir Gerard Noel Noel, 2nd Baronet (17 July 1759 – 25 February 1838), of Welham Grove in Leicestershire and Exton Park in Rutland, known as Gerard Edwardes until 1798, was an English Member of Parliament. Elizabeth Hay, Countess of Erroll (née FitzClarence; 17 January 1801 – 16 January 1856) was an illegitimate daughter of King William IV of the United Kingdom and Dorothea Jordan. She married William Hay, 18th Earl of Erroll, and became Countess of Erroll on 4 December 1820 at age 19. Due to Hay's parentage, William Hay became Lord Steward of the Household. Elizabeth and William Hay married at St George's, Hanover Square. Hay is pictured in a FitzClarence family portrait in House of Dun, and kept a stone thrown at her father William IV and the gloves he wore on opening his first Parliament as mementos. Charles George Noel, 2nd Earl of Gainsborough (5 September 1818 – 13 August 1881), styled Viscount Campden between 1841 and 1866, was a British peer and Whig politician. Background Gainsborough was the only child of Charles Noel, 1st Earl of Gainsborough, by his second wife Elizabeth, daughter of Sir George Grey, 1st Baronet. His mother died two weeks after he was born. He was the half-brother of Gerard Noel. He was educated privately and at Trinity College, Cambridge. Career Gainsborough succeeded his uncle William Noel as Member of Parliament for Rutland in 1840, but only held the seat until the following year.
