Arthur Morrison (politician)
Arthur Morrison (22 November 1846 – 21 November 1901) was a member of parliament in Dunedin, New Zealand. Early life Morrison was born in Darvel, Ayrshire, Scotland, in 1846 and attended the local parish school until aged nine years. He emigrated to New Zealand in 1874 and was a coal merchant in Dunedin from 1875 until his election to Parliament in 1893. He exemplified the self-made man who identified with Labour. Political career Morrison served on the Caversham Borough Council for three years. The ''Otago Daily Times'' said Morrison was a "careful reasoner". He represented the Caversham electorate in the New Zealand House of Representatives from the 1893 general election to his death in 1901. From 1900 until 1901 he was the Liberal Party's junior whip. Arthur Morrison
Arthur George Morrison (1 November 1863 – 4 December 1945) was an English writer and journalist known for realistic novels, for stories about working-class life in the East End of London, and for detective stories featuring a specific detective, Martin Hewitt. He also collected Japanese art and published several works on the subject. Much of his collection entered the British Museum, through purchase and bequest. Morrison's best known work of fiction is his novel ''A Child of the Jago'' (1896). Early life Morrison was born on 1 November 1863 in Poplar in the East End of London. His father George was an engine fitter at the London Docks, who died in 1871 of tuberculosis, leaving his wife Jane with Arthur and two other children. Arthur spent his youth in the East End. In 1879 he began work as an office boy in the Architect's Department of the London School Board. He later remembered frequenting used bookstores in Whitechapel Road about this time. Hanmer Springs
Hanmer Springs is a small town in the Canterbury region of the South Island of New Zealand. The Māori name for Hanmer Springs is Te Whakatakanga o te Ngārahu o te ahi a Tamatea, which means “where the ashes of Tamate’s (sic) fire lay”, referring to Tamatea, the captain of the canoe Tākitimu. Hanmer Springs is located north-west of Christchurch and south-west of Kaikōura ( by road), in the Hurunui District. The town lies on a minor road north of State Highway 7, the northern route between Christchurch and the West Coast via Lewis Pass. The township lies at the base of Conical Hill. Mount Isobel () looks over Hanmer Springs. Jacks Pass and Jollies Pass provide access to the Molesworth and Rainbow roads.
