Arthur Kill Road
Arthur Kill Road is a major northeast-southwest artery along the South- West Shore of the New York City borough of Staten Island. It is long, and runs through the neighborhoods of Tottenville, Richmond Valley, Charleston, Rossville, Woodrow, Huguenot, Arden Heights, Annadale, Eltingville, Greenridge, Great Kills, and Richmondtown. Arthur Kill Road is named for the waterway to its west, the Arthur Kill, which separates Staten Island from Union County and Middlesex County, New Jersey. It was known by other names in the 19th century, including Fresh Kills Road, Shore Road and Riverside Avenue. Landmarks include the Blazing Star Burial Ground, the Arthur Kill Correctional Facility, the unused LNG tanks east of Chemical Lane, the Kreischer House as well as the Outerbridge Crossing which Arthur Kill Road passes underneath. The Arthur Kill (sometimes referred to as the Staten Island Sound) is a tidal strait between Staten Island (also known as Richmond County), New York and Union and Middlesex counties, New Jersey. It is a major navigational channel of the Port of New York and New Jersey. Etymology The name Arthur Kill is an anglicization of the Dutch language ''achter kill'' meaning ''back channel'', which would refer to its location "behind" Staten Island and has its roots in the early 17th century during the Dutch colonial era when the region was part of New Netherland. Placenaming by early explorers and settlers during the era often referred to a location in reference to other places, its shape, its topography, and other geographic qualities. Eltingville, Staten Island
Eltingville is a neighborhood in the Staten Island borough of New York City, United States. It is located on Staten Island's South Shore, immediately to the south of Great Kills and north of Annadale. The main commercial area of Eltingville extends down Richmond Avenue, with offshoots heading north on Amboy Road and Hylan Boulevard. Eltingville is represented in the New York State Senate by Andrew Lanza, in the New York State Assembly by Michael Reilly, and in the New York City Council by Joe Borelli. History Originally called South Side, and later Seaside, the neighborhood owes its present name to a prominent family by the name of Elting which settled there in the early 19th century. Outerbridge Crossing
The Outerbridge Crossing, also known as the Outerbridge, is a cantilever bridge that spans the Arthur Kill between Perth Amboy, New Jersey, and Staten Island, New York. It carries New York State Route 440 (NY 440) and New Jersey Route 440, with the two roads connecting at the state border near the bridge's center. The Outerbridge Crossing is one of three vehicular bridges connecting New Jersey with Staten Island, and like the others, is maintained and operated by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. Kreischer House
Kreischer House, also known as Kreischer Mansion, is a historic home located at Charleston, Staten Island, New York City. Built by German immigrant Balthasar Kreischer about 1885, it is a large, asymmetrically massed -story, wood-frame house in the American Queen Anne style. The rectangular house features spacious verandas, gables with jigsaw bargeboards, decorative railings, posts and brackets, tall chimneys, and a corner tower. It was one of two mansions built by Kreischer for his sons. The surviving house belonged to son Edward Kreischer; the other one had been his brother Charles's. Arthur Kill Correctional Facility
Arthur Kill Correctional Facility was a medium security correctional facility on Arthur Kill Road in Charleston, Staten Island, New York City. It operated from 1976 to 2011, run by what was then the New York State Department of Correctional Services. The prison had a capacity of 931 male inmates. The prison property bordered Arthur Kill, a waterway that separates Staten Island from New Jersey. The Clay Pit Ponds State Park Preserve is located just south of the prison site. Part of its site contains buried truck trailers and is potentially contaminated; the decision was made to "deal" with the abandoned trailers' contents in this way. History Opened in 1976, the site formerly served as a 650-bed drug rehabilitation center, with an indoor swimming pool (closed when it became a prison); the housing of that unit was destroyed by fire.
