Arthur J. Stanley
Arthur John Stanley (26 June 1853 – 16 July 1935) was an English sportsman and stockbroker. An association footballer, he was member of Clapham Rovers F.C., for whom he played as an outside-forward. He also played both singles and doubles tennis at Wimbledon. Biography Stanley was the son of Charles Stanley, of 38 Warwick Road, Maida Hill, London. He was born at Paddington, London, and educated at Repton and Trinity College, Cambridge. Stanley made one appearance for Wanderers, scoring the only goal in a 1–0 victory over Westminster School on 21 November 1877. He was later a member of the Clapham Rovers team that reached the FA Cup final twice, losing 1–0 to Old Etonians in 1879, going on to win the cup in 1880 with a 1–0 win over Oxford University at The Kennington Oval. Hyde Park, London
Hyde Park is a Grade I-listed major park in Westminster, Greater London, the largest of the four Royal Parks that form a chain from the entrance to Kensington Palace through Kensington Gardens and Hyde Park, via Hyde Park Corner and Green Park past the main entrance to Buckingham Palace. The park is divided by the Serpentine and the Long Water lakes. The park was established by Henry VIII in 1536 when he took the land from Westminster Abbey and used it as a hunting ground. It opened to the public in 1637 and quickly became popular, particularly for May Day parades. Major improvements occurred in the early 18th century under the direction of Queen Caroline. Several duels took place in Hyde Park during this time, often involving members of the nobility. Charles Ross (tennis)
Charles Hoadley Ashe Ross (22 July 1852 – 5 February 1911) was an English sportsman who played both cricket and tennis, the latter of which was more extensive. Ross was a quarter finalist in singles at the 1886 Wimbledon Championships, and a two time semi finalist in men's doubles in 1885 and 1886. He played competitive tennis from 1884 to 1891, and reached fifteen finals, and won seven titles. Tennis career Ross entered his first tournament at the Sussex County Lawn Tennis Tournament in 1884, and progressed to the final before losing to Charles Lacy Sweet 3–1 in sets. In a period when international travel was difficult, he chose to play at the inaugural Ceylon Championships held at the Hill Club, Nuwara Eliya, British Ceylon where he won the title. Wilfred Milne
Wilfred Milne (24 March 1899 – 29 November 1977) was an English professional footballer. Herbert Wilberforce
Sir Herbert William Wrangham Wilberforce (8 February 1864 – 28 March 1941) was a British male tennis player. He was vice-president of the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club from 1911 to 1921 and served as its president from 1921 to 1936. In 1887, he and Patrick Bowes-Lyon won the doubles in Wimbledon. In 1888 they were unable to defend their title when they were beaten in the Challenge Round by Ernest and William Renshaw. His best singles performance at Wimbledon came in 1886 when he reached the semifinal of the All Comers tournament in which he lost in five sets to compatriot Ernest Lewis. He also reached the quarter-finals of the singles in 1882, 1883 and 1888. Herbert was a brother of physicist Lionel, son of judge Edward, grandson of archdeacon Robert and great-grandson of abolitionist William Wilberforce. Clement Cazalet
Clement Haughton Langston Cazalet (16 July 1869 – 23 March 1950) was a British tennis player who competed in the 1908 Summer Olympics. He was the son among 10 children of businessman William Clement Cazalet (brother of Edward Cazalet) and Emmeline Agnes Cazalet (nee Fawcett). Cazalet was educated at Rugby School and Trinity College, Cambridge. In 1908 he won the bronze medal in the men's doubles competition together with his partner Charles Dixon. While serving in the First World War as a Major and volunteer ambulance driver with the British Red Cross Society and St John Ambulance Brigade, Cazalet was awarded the Distinguished Service Order in the 1917 Birthday Honours. By profession he was a marine engineer who worked on undersea cable laying projects in the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean.
