Arthur J. Brown
Arthur J. Brown (born 1901, date of death unknown) was a Canadian politician and insurance underwriter in Toronto. Career After serving as a school trustee and ultimately chairman of the Toronto Board of Education, he subsequently ran twice for Mayor of Toronto in 1953 and 1954, once for the Toronto Board of Control, and once for alderman for Ward 2, all unsuccessfully. In the 1953 Toronto municipal election Brown ran on a platform promising to introduce rent control and came within 10,000 votes of defeating Allan Lamport for mayor. Brown ran again for mayor in the 1954 Toronto municipal election, this time against Leslie Saunders, who had been appointed mayor earlier in the year after Lamport resigned, and long-time alderman Nathan Phillips. Toronto District School Board
The Toronto District School Board (TDSB), formerly known as English-language Public District School Board No. 12 prior to 1999, is the English-language public-secular school board for Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Toronto Board Of Control
The Board of Control of Toronto, Ontario, Canada, was a part of its municipal government until it was abolished in 1969. It served as the executive committee of the Toronto City Council. When it was initially created in 1896 by mandate of the provincial government, it consisted of three Controllers appointed from and by the aldermen, and presided over by the Mayor of Toronto. Beginning in 1904, the Board of Control was directly elected by the city's electorate and consisted of four Controllers, presided over by the Mayor. Allan Lamport
Allan Austin Lamport, (April 4, 1903 – November 18, 1999) was mayor of Toronto, Ontario, Canada, from 1951 to 1954. Known as "Lampy", his most notable achievement was his opposition to Toronto's Blue laws which banned virtually any activities on Sundays. Lamport fought to allow professional sporting activities on Sundays. He won the 1954 election, but resigned after six months to become vice-chairman (later chairman) of the newly formed Toronto Transit Commission (TTC). Lamport later returned to City Council and made headlines for his opposition to Yorkville's hippies in the late 1960s. Political life He first sat on Toronto City Council in 1937. Municipal elections were held in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, on December 6, 1954. Incumbent mayor Leslie Saunders was defeated by Nathan Phillips in a close contest. Toronto mayor Controller Leslie Saunders had been appointed mayor after the resignation of Allan Lamport, who left to work with the Toronto Transit Commission. Leslie Saunders
Leslie Howard Saunders (September 12, 1899 – March 30, 1994) was Mayor of Toronto, Canada, from 1954 to 1955 and the last member of the Orange Order to hold the position until William Dennison. He also served as Mayor of East York in 1976. Early life Saunders was born in London, England and immigrated with his family to North Bay, Ontario at the age of six. He began his working career in Northern Ontario with the Ontario Northland Railway. A trade unionist, he became president of his local union and ran as a Labour candidate for North Bay's city council. He served in World War I and then became Secretary-General of the Great War Veteran's Association in North Bay helping raise money for a war memorial. Nathan Phillips (politician)
Nathan Phillips (November 7, 1892 – January 7, 1976) was a Canadian politician who served as the 53rd mayor of Toronto from 1955 to 1962. A lawyer by training, Phillips was first elected to Toronto City Council in 1926. He is the city's first Jewish mayor, ending an unbroken string of Protestant mayors. Early life Born in Brockville, Ontario, the son of Jacob Phillips and Mary Rosenbloom, he was educated in public and high schools in Cornwall, Ontario. In 1908, he articled with the Cornwall lawyer, Robert Smith, who later would be named to the Supreme Court of Canada. The Fairmont Royal York, formerly and still commonly known as the Royal York, is a large historic luxury hotel in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Located along Front Street West, the hotel is situated at the southern end of the Financial District, in Downtown Toronto.
