Arthur Hughes (American Actor)
Arthur Hughes (June 24, 1894 – December 28, 1982) was an American actor on the stage, radio and films. On Broadway, he performed in two dozen plays between 1923 and 1968, including ''Mourning Becomes Electra'' (1931–32) and ''Elizabeth the Queen'' (1930–31). On television he appeared in ''The DuPont Show of the Week'' and '' Playhouse 90''. Hughes played Steven Dallas on the radio soap opera '' Stella Dallas'' and was perhaps best known as title character Bill Davidson on the long-running daytime radio serial, ''Just Plain Bill''.DeLong, Thomas A. Bloomington is a city and the county seat of McLean County, Illinois, United States. It is adjacent to the town of Normal, and is the more populous of the two principal municipalities of the Bloomington–Normal metropolitan area. ''Playhouse 90'' was an American television anthology series, anthology drama series that aired on CBS from 1956 to 1960 for a total of 133 episodes. The show was produced at CBS Television City in Los Angeles, California. Since live anthology drama series of the mid-1950s usually were hour-long shows, the title highlighted the network's intention to present something unusual: a weekly series of hour-and-a-half-long dramas rather than 60-minute plays. ''Stella Dallas'' was an America radio soap opera that ran from October 25, 1937, to December 23, 1955. ''The New York Times'' described the title character as "the beautiful daughter of an impoverished farmhand who had married above her station in life." She was played for the entire run of the series by Anne Elstner. Her husband Stephen Dallas was portrayed at various times by Leo McCabe, Arthur Hughes and Frederick Tazere. Initially, Joy Hathaway played Stella's daughter Laurel with Vivian Smolen later taking over the role. ''Just Plain Bill'' was a 1932-1955 15-minute American radio drama program heard on CBS Radio and NBC Radio. It was "a story of people just like people we all know.” Originally called ''Bill the Barber'', the program began on CBS on September 19, 1932. It was originally broadcast at night, but on October 16, 1933, CBS added a daytime version. Night broadcasts ended in 1935, leaving only the daytime program thereafter until the show ended on September 30, 1955. It told the story of Bill Davidson ( Arthur Hughes), a barber in the town of Hartville, and his daughter Nancy (Ruth Russell). Edward Joel Pawley (March 16, 1901 in Kansas City, Missouri – January 27, 1988 in Charlottesville, Virginia) was an American actor of radio, films and Broadway. The full name on his birth certificate is Edward Joel Stone Pawley; he never used the Stone name, which derived from a Stone family in Illinois. Early years At maturity, Pawley was 5'10" tall with thick black hair and blue eyes. While in high school, he became interested in both journalism and acting.
