Arthur Gorrie Correctional Centre
Arthur Gorrie Correctional Centre is a high security Remand Centre for males, primarily accommodating individuals who a Judge or Magistrate has ordered must be held in custody as they await, and during, trial. The centre is located on the Ipswich Motorway at Wacol in the western suburbs of Brisbane, Australia. The centre's Maximum Security Unit was closed on 1 March 2013, with maximum security inmates moved to other maximum security facilities within the State. The centre is relatively modern with TVs, showers and toilets in all rooms and shared dining facilities. Managed by thQueensland Corrective Servicesthe Arthur Gorrie Correctional Centre was the second of Queensland's privately operated non-government prisons (previously managed by Geo Group), sharing the notation with the Southern Queensland Correctional Centre (previously managed by Serco). The Ipswich Motorway (M7) is a major road that connects Brisbane and Ipswich in South East Queensland, Australia. It commences at the junction of Ipswich Road and Granard Road and proceeds through to the M2 Logan Motorway interchange. It is then signed M2 until the junction of the Warrego Highway and the Cunningham Highway It initially passes through the suburbs of Rocklea, Oxley and Darra in south west Brisbane before reaching the eastern suburbs of Ipswich such as Redbank Plains, Goodna and Riverview. Southern Queensland Correctional Centre
The Southern Queensland Correctional Centre (SQCC) is an Australian prison facility located in the Lockyer Valley, 15 km north from Gatton, and 94 km west from Brisbane, Queensland. The 300-bed minimum to maximum security prison for females was built by Baulderstone and officially opened on 21 December 2011 by Corrective Services Minister Neil Roberts. The facilities began operation in January 2012. SQCC is the first completed stage of the Southern Queensland Correctional Precinct in Australia. The centre provides secure placement accommodation for sentenced mainstream female prisoners classified as high or low security and has 104 secure and 196 residential beds. Arthur Gorrie
Arthur Gorrie was born at West End in Brisbane on 19 May 1922. He ran a small hobby shop in Woolloongabba, and was involved with model aeronautical clubs including the Model Aeronautical Association of Australia and the Queensland Model Aeronautical Association from the early 1950s. He was also heavily involved with Toastmasters International, and was honored by them on many occasions, becoming a Distinguished Toastmaster in 1979 and Toastmaster of the Year on eight occasions. In 1987, the Model Aeronautical Association of Australia inducted Gorrie into their Hall of Fame, for his promotion of aero-modelling in Queensland for over thirty years. On 8 June 1992 he was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia for his services to Toastmasters and the Model Aeronautical Association of Australia.
