Arthur Folwell
Arthur Fitzgerald Folwell (23 September 1904 – 14 October 1966) was a British-born Australian professional rugby league footballer who played in the 1920s, 1930s and 1940s, coached in the 1940s, and was an administrator in the mid-20th century. An Australia national and New South Wales state representative , he played his club football in the New South Wales Rugby Football League for Sydney's Newtown before becoming their coach and taking them to the 1943 NSWRFL premiership. Playing career In 1933 Folwell was selected for the Australian touring squad for the 1933-34 Kangaroo tour of Great Britain . He became Kangaroo No. 179 when played in the 2nd and 3rd Test matches and he played another 19 matches on the 1933-34 tour. Coaching career Folwell coached Newtown for three seasons during the Second World War (1942-1944). Wigston Magna
Wigston, or Wigston Magna, is a town in Leicestershire, England, just south of Leicester on the A5199. It had a population of 32,321 in 2011. Geography Wigston is south of the city of Leicester, at the centre of Leicestershire and the East Midlands. Oadby is to the east, connected by the B582 road. To the west along the B582, or Blaby Road is South Wigston, (). Wigston is the largest of Leicester's satellite towns. 1943 NSWRFL Season
The 1943 New South Wales Rugby Football League premiership was the thirty-sixth season of Sydney's top-level rugby league competition, Australia's first. Eight teams from across the city contested during the season which lasted from April until September, culminating in the Newtown club's Grand Final victory over North Sydney. Season summary The season is notable for Newtown turning around their second-last placing from the previous season, becoming minor premiers and later premiers. On the other hand, defending premiers Canterbury-Bankstown had a disastrous season, finishing last and picking up the wooden spoon for the first of only four occasions to date. Eastern Suburbs also slumped from the four to their lowest placing and poorest record since 1929, and were not to recover their former prominence until the late 1960s. Percy Williams (Australian Rugby League Player)
Percy Edmund Williams (1910-1996) was an Australian rugby league player who played in the 1930s and 1940s. Playing career A Souths junior, Williams became a long serving and valuable member of the South Sydney club in the 1930s. He played seven seasons with South Sydney between 1931-1938 and also captained the club during the mid 1930s. Williams was a dual premiership winner with Souths, playing halfback in the 1931 and 1932 Grand Final teams. Williams represented New South Wales on 15 occasions between 1932-1938 and was selected on the 1937-38 Kangaroo Tour, playing in two tests against England and two tests against New Zealand. He finished his career at Newtown, playing two seasons (1940-1941) and was Captain-Coach in 1941. Greg Pierce
Gregory Stuart Pierce (4 March 1950 – 24 June 2016) was an Australian rugby league player, coach and administrator. He played as a for the Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks in the National Rugby League competition and for Australia. He captained his country on one occasion. Junior football Pierce grew up in Marrickville on the outskirts of inner Sydney and played his junior football for Sydenham in the Newtown Juniors as well as for the Belmore Old Boys in the Canterbury junior league. He was recommended to join Gymea in the fledgling Cronulla Sharks junior league after Sydenham were unable to field a team in his age group. Pierce was at university studying civil engineering when he was graded by Cronulla in 1969. Len Smith (rugby)
Len Smith (1918–2000) was an Australian representative rugby union and rugby league footballer who played in the 1930s and 1940s. He captained the Kangaroos in two Tests in 1948 and was controversially omitted from the 1948-49 Kangaroo tour of Great Britain. Rugby union career Smith played with the Eastern Suburbs RUFC in the 1930s and after making state representative appearance for New South Wales against Queensland, Victoria and the All Blacks he was selected as a Wallaby for the ill-fated 1939 tour of Great Britain. Docking at Southampton the day before World War II was declared, the side left England without playing a game. Wartime Smith enlisted in the AIF during World War II and served in Palestine, Egypt and Syria before returning home in 1942.
