Arthur A. Small
Arthur Adams Small, Jr. (October 14, 1933 – October 3, 2015) was an American lawyer and politician in the state of Iowa. He served in the Iowa House of Representatives from 1971 to 1979, and in the Iowa State Senate from 1979 to 1987, as a Democrat. Early life Small was born in Brunswick, Maine. He attended Bowdoin College, and served in the United States Army. He later earned a master's degree in English from the University of Iowa. Legislative career While serving in the Iowa General Assembly, Small entered law school at the age of forty-eight, earning a law degree from the University of Iowa College of Law. In 1986, Small ran unsuccessfully for Lieutenant Governor of Iowa. Post-legislative career From 1987 to 2000, Small practiced law and worked as a lobbyist representing a variety of clients. Jean Hall Lloyd-Jones (born October 14, 1929) is an American activist and politician. Born in Washington, D.C., Lloyd-Jones went to the University of New Mexico. She received her bachelor's degree from Northwestern University and her master's degree from University of Iowa. She was involved with the Iowa Peace Institute and the Iowa League of Women Voters. Roxanne Conlin
Roxanne Barton Conlin (born June 30, 1944) is an American lawyer who served as United States Attorney for the Southern District of Iowa from 1977 to 1981. A Democrat, she was a candidate for Governor of Iowa in 1982 and for United States Senate in 2010 but was not elected to either post. Education and early career Conlin was born to Marion W. and Alyce M. Barton on June 30, 1944, in Huron, South Dakota. Conlin and her family moved to Sioux City, Clinton, and then Des Moines, Iowa, in 1958. She attended Drake University in Des Moines, earning a B.A., J.D. and M.P.A. She married James Conlin in 1964 and has four children. The 2004 United States Senate election in Iowa was held on November 2, 2004. Incumbent Republican United States Senator Chuck Grassley ran for re-election to a fifth term in the United States Senate. Grassley and former State Senator Arthur A. Small won the Republican and Democratic primaries, respectively, unopposed, and faced each other in the general election. Classes Of United States Senators
The 100 seats in the United States Senate are divided into three classes for the purpose of determining which seats will be up for election in any two-year cycle, with only one class being up for election at a time. With senators being elected to fixed terms of six years, the classes allow about a third of the seats to be up for election in any presidential or midterm election year instead of having all 100 be up for election at the same time every six years. The seats are also divided in such a way that any given state's two senators are in different classes so that each seat's term ends in different years.
