Artesia Dodgers
The Artesia Dodgers was the final nickname of the minor league baseball team based in Artesia, New Mexico. Artesia teams played from 1951-1955 and 1958-1961 as an affiliate of the San Francisco Giants and Los Angeles Dodgers. History The Artesia Drillers (1951-1953) and later the Artesia Numexers(1954-1955) first began play in Artesia as members of the Longhorn League from 1951-1955. They were later an affiliate of the Los Angeles Dodgers during final season of existence in 1961. They finished 48-78 in the Sophomore League under manager Spider Jorgensen. Before becoming the Dodgers, they were a San Francisco Giants affiliate known as the Artesia Giants from 1958-1960. The 1954 Numexers were Longhorn League Champions after finishing 92-46 in the regular season. The team moniker was a combination of "New" and "Mexico." The Sophomore League was a Class D (baseball), Class D level minor league baseball league that operated from 1958 in sports, 1958 through 1961 in sports, 1961. League franchises were located in New Mexico and Texas. The league evolved from the Southwestern League, which played in 1956 and 1957. The name change was part of a systemic change. The circuit went from being one with almost no ties to major league baseball to a league where every team was a minor league affiliate of a major league team. Clarence Woodrow Jones (born November 7, 1940) is a former professional baseball player. He played from through for the Chicago Cubs. Listed at 6' 2", 185 lb., Jones batted and threw left-handed. He was born in Birmingham, Alabama Career In a two-season career, Jones was a .248 hitter (34-for-137) with two home runs and 16 RBI in 58 games, including 13 runs and seven doubles. Following his majors career, Jones played in Japan for the Kintetsu Buffaloes of the Pacific League. In 1974, he hit 38 home runs to lead the league, becoming the first foreign player to win a home run title in Nippon Professional Baseball. He led the Pacific League again with 36 home runs in 1976. The Longhorn League was the name of a Minor league baseball circuit that operated from through in the Southwestern United States. In , it was renamed the Southwestern League and operated through before changing its name to the Sophomore League. Joe Bauman hit 72 home runs in 1954 to set the minor league record, while playing for the Roswell Rockets. History The Longhorn League was a high–offense league that operated from 1947 through 1955. In 1956, it was renamed the Southwestern League. A league with only three teams ever affiliated with major league clubs, all for one year only, the league was home to veteran minor leaguers who were no longer of interest to major league teams. Dick Dietz
Richard Allen Dietz (September 18, 1941 – June 28, 2005) was an American professional baseball player and manager. He played in Major League Baseball as a catcher from 1966 to 1973, most prominently as a member of the San Francisco Giants where he was an All-Star player and was a member of the team that won the 1971 National League Western Division title. He also played for the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Atlanta Braves. After his playing career, Dietz worked as a minor league manager in the Giants organization. Playing career Born in Crawfordsville, Indiana, Dietz was signed by the San Francisco Giants as an amateur free agent out of Greenville, South Carolina before the start of the 1960 season. He showed some promise as a hitter, posting a .354 batting average with 35 home runs and 101 runs batted in while playing for the El Paso Sun Kings in the Texas League in 1963.
