Artah (Medieval Town)
Artah ( ar, أرتاح; modern-day Reyhanlı) was a medieval town and castle located 25 miles east-northeast of Antioch, to the east of the Iron Bridge on the Roman road from Antioch to Aleppo. History After the reconquest of Antioch by the Byzantine Empire in the late 10th century, Artah became the last Byzantine castle before the emirate of Aleppo. Nevertheless, the city changed possession several times during the 1060s and by the time of First Crusade, it was in the hand of local Turkmen rulers and was one of the keys to the success in the Crusaders' siege of Antioch. Ralph of Caen, in his ''Gesta Tancredi'', described Artah as the "shield of Antioch" and Albert of Aachen describes it as "very well fortified with a wall and ramparts and a turreted fortress". From Marash, a detachment under Robert of Flanders went in October 1098 to the southwest to capture Artah. Robert's force numbered 1000 armed men. Reyhanlı (; ar, الريحانية, ''ar-Rayḥānīyah'') is a town and district of Hatay Province, on the Mediterranean coast of Turkey, near the country's border with Syria. History Formerly known as İrtah (Artah) and Reyhaniye, Reyhanlı has been settled by Turks since the 16th century especially with Turkish "muhacir" (refugees), Turkic tribes from Rey and later in the 19th century from the Caucasus and Cyprus. Its southernmost environ, Yenişehir, is thought to be near the ancient village of Imma (or Immae), involved in the Battle of Immae in 272 and probably also with the so-called Battle of Antioch of 218. The 2013 Reyhanlı car bombings were a terrorist attack that involved the explosion of two car bombs in Reyhanlı on 11 May 2013. 51 people were killed, and 140 more were injured in the attack.
