Laon
Laon () is a city in the Aisne department in Hauts-de-France in northern France. History Early history The holy district of Laon, which rises a hundred metres above the otherwise flat Picardy plain, has always held strategic importance. In the time of Julius Caesar there was a Gallic village named Bibrax where the Remis (inhabitants of the country round Reims) had to meet the onset of the confederated Belgae. Whatever may have been the precise locality of that battlefield, Laon was fortified by the Romans, and successively checked the invasions of the Franks, Burgundians, Vandals, Alans and Huns. At that time it was known as ''Alaudanum'' or ''Lugdunum Clavatum''. Archbishop Remigius of Reims, who baptised Clovis, was born in the Laonnais, and it was he who, at the end of the fifth century, instituted the bishopric of Laon. Anguilcourt-le-Sart
Anguilcourt-le-Sart is a commune in the department of Aisne in the Hauts-de-France region of northern France. Notable incidents On 19 May 1983, 41 barrels of highly toxic chemical waste (dioxin-based), originating from the Seveso disaster, were found in an unused abattoir in Anguilcourt-le-Sart. The barrels, which had been illegally abandoned here by a transport contractor, were transferred the same evening to a military base near Sissonne. They were later destroyed in a high-temperature incinerator in Switzerald. Geography Anguilcourt-le-Sart is located some 30 km southeast of Saint-Quentin and 25 km northwest of Laon. Bassoles-Aulers
Bassoles-Aulers is a Communes of France, commune in the Departments of France, department of Aisne in the Hauts-de-France region of northern France. Geography Bassoles-Aulers is located some 18 km southeast of Chauny and 15 km east by southeast of Laon. Access to the commune is by road D532 which runs off the D5 in a loop through the commune and the village then back to the D5 near Quincy-Basse. The D13 road also forms part of the northern border of the commune and links to two country roads leading to the commune and the village. The commune is heavily forested in the north, east, and south with areas of farmland in the centre and west of the village. Barisis-aux-Bois
Barisis-aux-Bois, formerly called Barisis until 3 December 2014, is a commune in the department of Aisne in the Hauts-de-France region of northern France. Geography Barisis-aux-Bois is located some 20 km west of Laon and 25 km north of Soissons. The village is in the heart of the national forest of Saint-Gobain. The commune can be accessed by the D1750 road from Pierremande in the west to the village with the D534 continuing east to Saint-Gobain and the D535 going southeast to Septvaux. There is also the D53 road from Amigny-Rouy in the north passing through the village and continuing south to Verneuil-sous-Coucy. Barenton-sur-Serre
Barenton-sur-Serre (, literally ''Barenton on Serre'') is a commune in the department of Aisne in the Hauts-de-France region of northern France. Geography Barenton-sur-Serre is located some 35 km southeast of Saint-Quentin and 15 km northeast of Laon. National Route N2 passes through the commune from Froidmont-Cohartille in the northeast running southwest through the commune. Access to the village is by road D3060 running west from the N2 to the village then continuing north-west to road D12. There is also access to the village on a country road from Froidmont-Cohartille. There is quite a large area of forest north of the village and in a belt extending southeast of the village. The rest of the commune is all farmland. Barenton-Cel () is a Communes of France, commune in the Departments of France, department of Aisne in the Hauts-de-France region of northern France. Geography Barenton-Cel is located some 10 km north by northeast of Laon and 40 km southeast of Saint-Quentin, Aisne, Saint-Quentin. Barenton-Bugny () is a commune in the department of Aisne in the Hauts-de-France region of northern France. Geography Barenton-Bugny is located some 5 km north by northwest of Laon and 8 km south of Crecy-sur-Serre. The Autoroute des Anglais (A26 autoroute) passes through the commune, and there is an exit just south of the commune to National Highway N2 which passes north-east through the commune. From National Highway N2 the commune can be accessed on road D546 going north to the village then continuing northwest to intersect the D545 going north to Barenton-Cel. Autreville () is a commune in the department of Aisne in the Hauts-de-France region of northern France. Geography Autreville is located 3 km south by southeast of Chauny and 20 km east of Noyon. It can be accessed by the D937 road coming south from Chauny through the heart of the commune and the village and continuing south to Pierremande. The D6 road goes west from the D937 north of the village to Manicamp and the D7 goes east from the D937 to Sinceny. The urban area of Sinceny extends west into the commune in the north. Aulnois-sous-Laon (, literally ''Aulnois under Laon'') is a commune in the department of Aisne in the Hauts-de-France region of northern France. Geography Aulnois-sous-Laon is located some 30 km southeast of Saint-Quentin and 5 km due north of Laon. The A26 autoroute passes through the northeastern part of the commune but has no exit in the commune. The D967 road also passes through the commune from Crecy-sur-Serre in the north continuing to Laon in the south. Aubigny-en-Laonnois is a commune in the department of Aisne in the Hauts-de-France region of northern France. Geography Aubigny-en-Laonnois is located some 18 km south-east of Laon and 35 km north-west of Rheims. Athies-sous-Laon (, literally ''Athies under Laon'' is a commune in the department of Aisne in the Hauts-de-France region of northern France. Geography Athies-sous-Laon is located 3 km east of Laon and 15 km west of Sissonne. It can be accessed by the D977 from Laon which continues east to Gizy. The Autoroute des Anglais (A26, E17) traverses the commune from north to southeast, but there is no exit in the commune. There is also a railway line going east from Laon with a station in the commune northeast of the town. The town area of Athies-sous-Laon is quite large, but is separated from Laon by farmland.
