Arrondissement Of Ghent
The Arrondissement of Ghent (; ) is the largest of the six administrative arrondissements in the Province of East Flanders, Belgium. It is both an administrative and a judicial arrondissement. However, the Judicial Arrondissement of Ghent also comprises the municipalities of the Arrondissement of Eeklo. History The Arrondissement of Ghent was created in 1800 as the first arrondissement in the Department of Escaut (). It originally comprised the cantons of Deinze, Eeklo, Evergem, Ghent, Kruishoutem, Lochristi, Nazareth, Nevele, Oosterzele, Waarschoot and Zomergem. In 1803, the canton of Eeklo was merged with the Arrondissement of Sas-van-Gent to form the Arrondissement of Eeklo. The canton of Kruishoutem was ceded to the Arrondissement of Oudenaarde in 1818. In 1921, parts of Laarne and Kalken (in the Arrondissement of Dendermonde) were added to the arrondissement to form the new municipality of Beervelde. Nazareth () is a municipality located in the Belgian province of East Flanders. The municipality comprises the towns of and Nazareth proper. In 2021, Nazareth had a total population of 11,844. The total area is 35.19 km² which gives a population density of 320 inhabitants per km². Lievegem
Lievegem () is a municipality in the Belgian province of East Flanders that arose on 1 January 2019 from the merging of the municipalities of Waarschoot, Lovendegem and Zomergem. The merged municipality has an area of 80.78 km² and is home to 26,441 inhabitants as of 2021. A referendum was held for the new name of the municipality, and 55% voted for Lievegem (literally '' Lieve Canal settlement''). Lovendegem
Lovendegem () is a town and former municipality located in Flanders, one of the three regions of Belgium, and in the province of East Flanders. The municipality comprised the towns of Lovendegem proper and Vinderhoute. In 2018, Lovendegem had a total population of 9,574. The total area is 19.48 km². History The name of the town was first recorded as ''Lovendenghiem'' in 1150, but there are traces of human settlements back to the Iron Age. The name means "settlement of the people of Lubantos (person)". Lovendegem used to be a complicated patchwork of '' heerlijkheden'' (landed estates) and one barony. Knesselare () is a village and ''deelgemeente'' in the municipality of Aalter and a former municipality located in the Belgian province of East Flanders. The municipality comprised the towns of Knesselare proper and . The municipality's name is derived from the Germanic words "''klisse''" (herb) and "''laar''", (a soggy brushwood terrain), and was first attested in 1128. Knesselare became an independent parish in 1171. It was originally a village ''heerlijkheid'', but during the rule of Louis II, Count of Flanders (1330–1384), the area had been split into four different administrations. Aalter () is a municipality located between Bruges and Ghent in the Belgian province of East Flanders. The municipality comprises the towns of Aalter, Bellem, , , Knesselare and . It is bordered on the north by Maldegem, on the east by Zomergem and Nevele, on the south by Deinze, and on the west by the province of West Flanders. The mayor is Pieter De Crem. Zelzate
Zelzate () is a municipality located in the Belgian province of East Flanders. The municipality only comprises the town of Zelzate proper. In 2021, Zelzate had a total population of 13,124. The total area is 13.71 km2. Zelzate is divided into two parts by the Ghent–Terneuzen Canal. There is a concrete drawbridge and a tunnel to connect the two sides. Zelzate is known for the nearby polluting industry, which makes it the village with the lowest air quality in the country. Ertvelde
Ertvelde is a village of the Belgian municipality of Evergem. Eddy Wally used to have his legendary show venue in the village-centre, called "Paris, Las Vegas". The Brouwerij Van Steenberge is located in Ertvelde. The brewery produces Gulden Draak, a strong tripel ale. Kluizen
Kluizen is a village in the municipalities of Evergem and Ghent in the province of East Flanders, Belgium. Large parts of the original municipality have become part of the Port of Ghent. History The area around Kluizen used to be a wilderness of heath and sand grounds. Between 1115 and 1119, the land was donated to the Ename Abbey by Baldwin VII, Count of Flanders for cultivation and the construction of church. Kluizen became a parish before 1179. The village was first mentioned in 1270, and means hermitages. The area was cultivated by the late 13th century. Kluizen frequently suffered from war and was nearly depopulated during the Eighty Year's War (1568–1648). World War I and II also caused severe damage to the village.
