Arpana Caur
Arpana Caur is an Indian contemporary painter and graphic artist. Early life and education Arpana Caur was born in 1954, in Delhi. She comes from a Sikh family who fled the Punjab, Pakistan, Pakistani West Punjab to the Republic of India in 1947 during the confusion over the Partition of India, partition of British India. Her mother Ajeet Cour, Ajit Kaur (born in 1934), is a writer who writes in Punjabi language, Panjabi. She has not had her first name Arpana since her birth, but she adopted it at the age of fifteen, as an expression of a personal development process. Her exposure to art, music and literature happened early in her life. She learnt the Sitar, wrote poetry, but enjoyed painting the most. Ajeet Caur
Ajeet Cour (born 1934) is an Indian writer who writes in Punjabi language, Punjabi. She is a recipient of the List of Sahitya Akademi Award winners for Punjabi, Sahitya Akademi Award and the Padma Shri, the fourth-highest civilian award by the Government of India. Biography Ajeet Cour was born in the family of Sardar Makhan Singh in 1934 in Lahore. She had her early education there. After the Partition of India, partition, her family came to Delhi, where she earned an M.A. (Economics). She has written novels and short stories in the Punjabi language on social-realist themes such as the experience of women in relationships and their position in society. She received the Sahitya Akademi Award in 1985, the civilian honour of Padma Shri in 2006, and the Kuvempu Rashtriya Puraskar award in 2019. The Peabody Essex Museum (PEM) in Salem, Massachusetts, US, is a successor to the East India Marine Society, established in 1799. Government Museum and Art Gallery, Chandigarh, is a premier museum of North India having collections of Gandharan sculptures, sculptures from ancient and medieval India, Pahari and Rajasthani miniature paintings. It owes its existence to the partition of India in August, 1947. Prior to the partition, much of the collections of art objects, paintings and sculptures present here were housed in the Central Museum, Lahore, the then capital of Punjab.
