Arnold Fine
Arnold Fine (January 15, 1924 – September 5, 2014) was an editor and columnist, known for editing ''The Jewish Press'' and a humor columnist. He was known for his "I Remember When." For decades his writings, which included a companion feature titled "''A Bi Gezunt''," were on the back page, and subsequently on the inside of the back page. He also published 2 volumes of ''Abi Gezunt'' Serious side His I Remember When column at times wiped out his only-humor ''Abi Gezunt'' when he had something serious to tell his readers. ''The Jewish Press'' is an American weekly newspaper based in Brooklyn, New York, and geared toward the Modern Orthodox Jewish community. It describes itself as "America's Largest Independent Jewish Weekly". ''The Jewish Press'' has an online version which is updated daily and reportedly has a readership of 2 million views each month. History The ''Press'' was founded in 1960 by Rabbi Sholom Klass, a Yeshiva Torah Vodaath graduate who had grown up in Williamsburg and who previously co-published the ''Brooklyn Daily''. In 1994, Klass stated that the ''Press'' would not accept advertising from the United Jewish Appeal, describing it as subsidies for competitors. Hiram Bingham IV
Hiram "Harry" Bingham IV (July 17, 1903 – January 12, 1988) was an American diplomat. He served as a Vice Consul in Marseilles, France, during World War II, and, along with Varian Fry, helped over 2,500 Jews to flee from France as Nazi forces advanced. Early life Bingham was one of seven sons of former Governor of Connecticut and U.S. Senator Hiram Bingham III and his first wife, Alfreda Mitchell, heiress of the Tiffany and Co. fortune through her maternal grandfather Charles L. Tiffany. His father was also the first American to explore the Inca ruins at Machu Picchu. His great-grandfather Hiram Bingham I and grandfather Hiram Bingham II were among the first Protestant missionaries to the Kingdom of Hawaii. GI Bill
The Servicemen's Readjustment Act of 1944, commonly known as the G.I. Bill, was a law that provided a range of benefits for some of the returning World War II veterans (commonly referred to as G.I.s). The original G.I. Bill expired in 1956, but the term "G.I. Bill" is still used to refer to programs created to assist some of the U.S. military veterans. It was largely designed and passed through Congress in 1944 in a bipartisan effort led by the American Legion who wanted to reward practically all wartime veterans. Shalom Klass
Rabbi Sholom Klass (1916–2000) was the co-founder, publisher and editor of ''The Jewish Press'', a large Jewish circulation newspaper. He also authored ''Tales from our Gaonim'' and the halachic work ''Responsa of Modern Judaism'' (3 volumes). Rabbi Klass received smicha (rabbinical ordination) from Yeshiva Torah Vodaas. Prior to starting The Jewish Press, he was a co-publisher of ''The Brooklyn Daily'' (now defunct). Legacy His daughter's "Dear Dad", written for his ninth yahrtzeit, contains examples of one of Rabbi Klass' major accomplishments: the popularization of the use of a dash in writing G-d's name, in English, as the normative form by Orthodox Jews.
