Armenian Church Of St. John The Baptist
St. John the Baptist Church of Chinsura ( Armenian: ), is located in Chinsura, India. The church was built in 1695–1697 and is dedicated to St. John the Baptist. It is the second oldest Christian church in Bengal, and the oldest Armenian church in India. The church is well preserved due to its proximity to Kolkata and the care committee of the Armenian Churches. The Armenian Church of Chinsura was started in 1699. A spire was added to the church in 1822, for which the Dutch resident of Bengal Daniel Anthony Overbeek laid the foundation stone. Hugli-Chuchura
Hugli-Chuchura or Hooghly-Chinsurah is a city and a municipality of Hooghly district in the Indian state of West Bengal. It lies on the bank of Hooghly River, 35 km north of Kolkata. It is located in the district of Hooghly and is home to the district headquarters. Chuchura houses the Commissioner of the Burdwan Range. It is a part of the area covered by Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority (KMDA). The District Court building of Chinsurah is the longest building in West Bengal. Daniel Anthony Overbeek
Daniel Anthony Overbeek (6 February 1765 – 25 September 1840) was the last resident of Dutch Bengal between 1817 and 1825. Biography Daniel Anthony Overbeek was born to Daniel Overbeek (1727–1770) and Theodora Petronella Immens. Relatives on his father's side had long been employees of the Dutch East India Company, with the brother of his grandfather Nicolaas Overbeek, who was also called Daniel Overbeek, even serving as governor of Dutch Ceylon. Like his father, Daniel Anthony Overbeek made a career in Dutch Bengal, until in 1795 the Dutch possessions were ceded to the British by instruction of Dutch stadtholder William V, who wanted to prevent revolutionary France from taking possession of the Dutch holdings in Asia. Karekin II
Catholicos Karekin II ( hy, Գարեգին Բ, also spelled Garegin; born 21 August 1951) is the current Catholicos of All Armenians, the supreme head of the Armenian Apostolic Church. In 2013 he was unanimously elected the Oriental Orthodox head of the World Council of Churches for the next eight years. Biography Karekin II was born as Ktrij Nersessian in Voskehat, Armenia, on 21 August 1951. He entered the Gevorkian Theological Seminary at Echmiadzin in 1965 and graduated with honours in 1971. He was ordained to the diaconate in 1970. Later he became a monk and was ordained a priest in 1972. In the late 1970s the Catholicos of that period encouraged him to study outside of Armenia. This led to him continuing his studies in Vienna, Bonn University, and Zagorsk, Russia. On 23 October 1983, he was consecrated bishop at Echmiadzin. He became an archbishop in 1992. The Armenian Holy Church of Nazareth () is an 18th-century Armenian Apostolic church in Kolkata, India, serving as the centre of the Armenian Community in Kolkata and the seat of the Armenian Vicariate of India and the Far East.
