Armed Islamic Group (GIA)
The Armed Islamic Group (GIA, from french: Groupe Islamique Armé; ar, الجماعة الإسلامية المسلّحة, al-Jamāʿa l-ʾIslāmiyya l-Musallaḥa) was one of the two main Islamist insurgent groups that fought the Algerian government and Algerian Army, army in the Algerian Civil War. It was created from smaller armed groups following the Algerian Civil War#1992 coup and cancellation of elections, 1992 military coup and arrest and internment of thousands of officials in the Islamist Islamic Salvation Front (FIS) party after that party won the first round of Algerian legislative election, 1991, parliamentary elections in December 1991. An Islamic state is a State (polity), state that has a form of government based on sharia, Islamic law (sharia).
