Armand Deperdussin
Armand Deperdussin (July 8, 1864 in Liège, Belgium – June 11, 1924 in Paris) was a French industrialist and aviation pioneer. Having established himself as a silk-broker, he became involved in the aviation industry in 1910 after witnessing the triumphs of aviator Louis Blériot, founding Société de Production des Aéroplanes Deperdussin. In 1912 he bought Champagne Airfield, and built 30 workshops and other buildings, founding one of the first flying schools. He hired aircraft designer Louis Béchereau, who designed monohull aircraft whose streamlined shapes achieved previously unattainable performance. With dedicated staff and revolutionary technical advances, the company won many prizes, especially the international Gordon Bennett Trophy in France in 1912 with pilot Jules Védrines, who became the first pilot to fly over 100 mph [], and again in 1913 with pilot Maurice Prévost, who flew . Blériot Aéronautique
Blériot Aéronautique was a French aircraft manufacturer founded by Louis Blériot. It also made a few motorcycles between 1921 and 1922 and cyclecars during the 1920s. Background Louis Blériot was an engineer who had developed the first practical headlamp for cars and had established a successful business marketing them. In 1901 he had built a small unmanned ornithopter, but his serious involvement with aviation began in April 1905 when he witnessed Gabriel Voisin's first experiments with a floatplane glider towed behind a motorboat on the river Seine. Maurice Prévost
Lucien Maurice Prévost, known as Maurice Prévost, (22 September 1887 in Reims – 27 November 1952) in Neuilly-sur-Seine) was a French pioneer aviator, best remembered for winning the first Schneider Trophy race in 1913, and the Gordon Bennett Trophy in the same year. Maurice Prévost was born in Reims at 5 rue Flodoard. He studied at the Practical School of Commerce and Industry of Reims. Joining the Betheny Deperdussin Aviation School in November 1910, Prévost rose to chief instructor. He obtained his civil pilot's license on 29 April 1911 (#475), and his military wings (#38) on 26 August 1911. He secured third place in the French military aircraft trials in November 1911 and won the altitude competition. In December 1911 he reached 10,000 feet, breaking the world altitude record with a passenger. Prévost won the first Schneider Trophy race at Monaco on 16 April 1913, and on 27 September 1913 he won the Gordon Bennett Trophy.
