Arlington Matron Stakes
The Matron Stakes is an American Grade III flat horse race for Thoroughbred fillies and mares, aged three years and upward. Raced over a distance of 9 furlongs on the dirt at Arlington Park, Arlington Heights, Illinois every spring. It currently offers a purse of $100,000. The event was moved to Churchill Downs in 2017. Inaugurated in 1930, Hall of Fame member, Bewitch, ran second in 1949. Arlington Park
Arlington International Racecourse (formerly Arlington Park, the name was Arlington Park Jockey Club from as soon as 1948 up to 1955) was a horse race track in the Chicago suburb of Arlington Heights, Illinois. Horse racing in the Chicago region had been a popular sport since the early days of the city in the 1830s, and at one time Chicago had more horse racing tracks (six) than any other major metropolitan area. Arlington International was the site of the first thoroughbred race with a million-dollar purse in 1981. It was located near the Illinois Route 53 expressway. It was serviced by the Chicago and Northwestern Railroad. The premier event at Arlington Park was the International Festival of Racing, held in early August, which featured three Grade 1 races on turf: the Arlington Million Stakes, Beverly D. Pucker Up (horse)
Pucker Up (1953) was an American Champion Thoroughbred racing mare. She was bred by Dan and Ada Rice's Danada Farm, and raced under Mrs. Rice's name. Her training was handled by future U.S. Racing Hall of Fame inductee, Jimmy Conway and his assistant, Al Robertson. Racing in Chicago, in July she won the Arlington Matron Handicap and in early September the Washington Park Handicap. and then on September 21 the Beldame Handicap at Belmont Park in Elmont, New York. After winning the October 17 Spinster Stakes Prep at Keeneland she finished second to Bornastar in the Spinster Stakes. Pucker Up was voted American Champion Older Female Horse of 1957. In 1961, Arlington Park Racetrack honored her with the Pucker Up Stakes, a race on turf for three-year-old fillies. Jeremy Rose (born April 1, 1979 in Bellefonte, Pennsylvania) is an American Thoroughbred racehorse jockey. He began his career as a professional rider at Delaware Park in Wilmington, Delaware and in 2001 was his breakout year and he was voted the United States' Eclipse Award for Outstanding Apprentice Jockey. In 2005, Rose guided Afleet Alex, to victory in two American Classic Races, the Preakness and Belmont Stakes. His performances that year earned him the ESPY Award as the top American jockey of 2005. He earned his 1000th career victory at Delaware Park on July 3, 2005.
