The Arlanza River rises in the Sierra de la Demanda, near Quintanar de la Sierra in an area known as Fuente Sanza. As it flows through the province of Burgos, Spain, it passes through the municipalities of Castrovido, Salas de los Infantes, Covarrubias and Lerma, broadly east to west roughly parallel to and north of the River Duero. Its main tributary is the River Arlanzón that joins near Quintana del Puente shortly before the Arlanza itself joins River Pisuerga The Pisuerga is a river in northern Spain, the Duero's second largest tributary. Comarca del Arlanza is a ''Comarcas of Castile and León, comarca'' located south-east of the province of Burgos in the autonomous community of Castile and León. It is bounded on the north by the Odra-Pisuerga and the Alfoz de Burgos, south by the Ribera del Duero (comarca), Ribera del Duero, on the east by the province of Palencia and west by the Sierra de la Demanda (comarca), Sierra de la Demanda. Administrative Entities The comarca capital is Lerma, Burgos, Lerma. Municipalities There are 44 municipalities: In parentheses is the number of minor local entities from each municipality Geography The waters of the river Arlanza originate in the pines forest of Quintanar de la Sierra and flow from East to West. Arlanza (DO)
Arlanza is a Spanish Denominación de Origen Protegida (DOP) located in the provinces of Burgos and Palencia, Castile and León, Spain. It was officially upgraded from the lower status of QWPSR (''VCPRD'' in Spanish) in 2007. The DOP covers 67 municipalities (54 in the province of Burgos and 13 in the province of Palencia). There are 23 wineries (''bodegas'') from Burgos registered and 2 from Palencia. The DOP takes its name from the river Arlanza which flows through it. History The first written evidence of wine production in this area comes from the 12th century, when the monastery of Santa María de Bujedo de Juarros ( es) purchased vineyards on the banks of the rivers Arlanza and Duero. When the phylloxera virus devastated the vineyards of Europe at the end of the 19th century, almost all the vineyards in this area were uprooted and replanted by grafting onto American rootstock. San Pedro De Arlanza
San Pedro de Arlanza is a ruined Benedictine monastery in north central Spain. It is located in the valley of the river Arlanza in Hortigüela, Burgos. Founded in 912, it has been called the "cradle of Castile" (''cuna de Castilla''). It was abandoned in 1841 during the confiscations of Juan Álvarez Mendizábal's government, when ecclesiastical properties were roundly redistributed. San Pedro's two purported founding documents, preserved in twelfth-century cartulary, were issued one by Count Fernán González and his wife, Sancha of Navarre, and the other by Fernán's mother and brother, Muniadona Ramírez and Ramiro González, with Count Gonzalo Téllez and his wife, Flamula. Both documents suffer from certain inconsistencies and anachronisms that have cast doubts on their authenticity, especially that of Fernán González.
