Arkhangelsk Tramway
A tramway system operated in the Russian city of Arkhangelsk from 1916 to 2004, when the last line closed down. During that period it was the most northerly such system in the world: before 1916 that distinction had been held by the city trams in Kiruna, Sweden; since 2004 the honour has belonged to the Trondheim Tramway in Norway. History Work on the first tramway line started in 1914 and it was opened on 26 June 1916. Until 1956 Arkhangelsk had two separate tramway networks – one running on the mainland and the other on the island of Solombala as there was no bridge to carry the trams over the Kuznechikha river. At certain times during the winter, tracks were laid directly on the ice (a similar method was used in St Petersburg during some winters). The opening of the Kuznechevskiy Bridge in 1956 made it possible to connect the two networks permanently. Trondheim Tramway
The Trondheim Tramway in Trondheim, Norway, is the world's most northerly tramway system, following the closure and dismantling of the Arkhangelsk tramways in Russia. It consists of one 8.8-km-long line, the Gråkallen Line, running from St. Olav's Gate in the city centre through Byåsen to Lian Station in Bymarka. Background Numbered Line 1, it is operated by Boreal Bane, a subsidiary of Boreal Norge and is often simply called the Gråkallen Line (Gråkallbanen). Gråkallbanen operates five tram cars, out of a total rolling stock of nine articulated tram cars built by Linke-Hofmann-Busch in 1984. In addition heritage cars from the Trondheim Tramway Museum are available for chartered tours. Petersburg Tram Mechanical Factory (''PTMF'') (russian: Петербу́ргский трамва́йно-механи́ческий заво́д, ''ПТМЗ'') was one of the leading manufacturers of tramcars in Russia and the CIS-countries located in Saint Petersburg. As the only tram manufacturing plant in Russia for several decades (until 1981), it was the sole supplier of rolling stock for the tram system in St. Petersburg.
