Arkansas Highway 84 (AR 84, Hwy. 84) is a designation for two state highways in west Arkansas. The western segment is long and travels from County Road 14 (CR 14) in Bogg Springs and heads east to U.S. Route 59 and U.S. Route 71 (US 59/US 71) before terminating. Umpire, Arkansas
Umpire (also Busby) is an unincorporated community in Howard County, Arkansas, United States. It has frequently been noted on lists of unusual place names. History In the early 1890s a new gristmill opened in the area. There was a celebratory baseball game after which a schoolteacher addressed the crowd and suggested the name Umpire for the new post office. That is because the Umpire did an outstanding job overseeing the game. On April 24, 2011, an EF1 tornado causing some damage, traveled from Umpire to Mineola parallel to Arkansas State Route 84. On April 13, 2018, an EF2 tornado caused some damage travelled from Kirby Road north crossing Battle Hill Road, then Highway 278 to Shady Lake in the Ouachita National Forest. Shady Lake Recreation Area
Shady Lake Recreation Area is a campground and public recreation area in southwestern Ouachita National Forest, southwest of Mena, Arkansas and west of Glenwood, Arkansas. The area is oriented around Shady Lake, a body of water on the South Fork Saline River impounded by a dam built c. 1940 by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC). The area is administered by the United States Forest Service (USFS). Description Shady Lake is located in central western Arkansas, on the southern fringe of Ouachita National Forest, about west of Glenwood. Albert Pike Recreational Area
Albert Pike Recreation Area is a recreational area located in the Ouachita National Forest about 6 miles north of Langley, Arkansas, in southern Montgomery County, featuring swimming and camping areas on the Little Missouri River. Flooding tragedy During the night of June 10–11, 2010 a flash flood along Little Missouri River killed 20 people in the campgrounds of the Albert Pike Recreation Area. In a matter of less than four hours water rose from three feet to over twenty-three feet. Since that time the U.S. Forest Service has closed the site for further evaluation. Lake Greeson is a reservoir on the Little Missouri River, about north of Murfreesboro, Arkansas, United States. Famous for its scenery and recreation, it is surrounded by 15 parks that offer opportunities for camping, fishing, boating, biking, and swimming.
