Arkansas Highway 337
Highway 337 (AR 337, Ark. 337, and Hwy. 337) is a designation for two state highways in the Ozarks. One segment connects Sugar Loaf Mountain Use Area to Highway 92, and the second connects Highway 5/ Highway 25 and Highway 16 southeast of Heber Springs. Both routes are maintained by the Arkansas Department of Transportation (ArDOT). Route description Van Buren County Highway 337 begins near the Van Buren/ Cleburne county line in the Ozark Mountains. The southern terminus is an intersection with Highway 92, and runs almost due west, but is signed north-south due to Arkansas's signing convention for odd-numbered routes. The highway terminates at the border of the Sugar Loaf Use Area on Greers Ferry Lake, which is owned and maintained by the United States Army Corps of Engineers (USACE, or "the Corps"). Cleburne County, Arkansas
Cleburne County is a county located in the U.S. state of Arkansas. As of the 2010 census, the population was 25,970. The county seat and most populous city is Heber Springs. The county was formed on February 20, 1883, as the last of Arkansas's 75 counties to be formed. It is named for Confederate Major-General Patrick Cleburne. Cleburne is an alcohol prohibition or dry county. Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of , of which is land and (6.5%) is water. Much of the water area in the County includes Greers Ferry Lake, which extends westward into neighboring Van Buren County. Sugarloaf Mountain (Cleburne County, Arkansas)
Sugarloaf Mountain is a hiking and mountain biking destination located in Cleburne County, Arkansas, east of the city of Heber Springs, Arkansas, in the foothills of the Ozark Mountains. It is a 690 feet (210 m) erosional remnant beside Little Red River (Arkansas). The mountain is topped by an Atoka formation, a geologic formation sequence of sandstone, siltstone, and shale. History The Osage Tribe called the mountain Tonawanda or Ton-Wan-Dah (swift water). The name was that of a family of arrowhead makers. The earliest settlers called the mountain 'Sugarloaf' because of the resemblance in shape to the loaves of unrefined sugar in use at that time. The Louisiana Purchase survey party in 1819 noted the feature as "encountered Sugar Lofe , a well-known landmark". Natives and travelers on the nearby Little Red River used the mountain as a landmark. Highway 110 (AR 110, Ark. 110, and Hwy. 110) is a designation for three east–west state highways in north central Arkansas. One segment of runs east from US Highway 65 (US 65) at Botkinburg to Highway 9/ Highway 16 near Shirley. Little Red River (Arkansas)
The Little Red River is a river in White, Van Buren, Searcy, Stone and Cleburne counties of north-central Arkansas. History During the American Civil War, the Battle of Whitney's Lane took place near Searcy on the banks of the Little Red River. Location The upper tributaries of the Little Red River are known as the South Fork, the Middle Fork, and the Devils Fork. Prior to the impoundment of Greers Ferry Lake the three tributaries converged just east of Sugar Loaf Mountain. The South Fork begins in the Ozark National Forest near Scotland in Van Buren County and flows into Greers Ferry Lake near Clinton. The Middle Fork begins only a few miles from the South Fork near Tilly in Van Buren County but flows northward into Searcy County.
