Arkansas Highway 268
Highway 268 (AR 268, Ark. 268, and Hwy. 268) is a designation for two state highways in Marion County. One route of runs from Highway 14 to Marion County Road 227 (CR 227, B Rodgers Cir) and CR 259 (Locust Rd). A second route in south Marion County runs from Highway 14 to the Buffalo National River. Both routes are maintained by the Arkansas State Highway and Transportation Department (AHTD). Route description Western Marion County The route begins at Highway 14 in northeast Marion County within the Ozark Mountains. The route serves as a short rural route near Bull Shoals Lake, running northeast to and intersection, where it meets Marion CR 227 (B Rodgers Cir) and CR 259 (Locust Rd). The roadway continues east as CR 259/Locust Rd, with CR 227 running north from the intersection. Generally the two-digit odd numbered highways run north–south with a few exceptions; and even-numbered two-digit state highways run east–west with a few exceptions. Arkansas has long had a stigma of poor roads, dating from the "Arkansas Roads Scandal" playing a prominent role in state politics through the 1920s and 1930s, periodic allegations of corruption, waste, and fraud, and a long-running struggle to adequately fund the operation, maintenance and expansion of a large highway system serving a rural state. Buffalo River State Park (Arkansas)
Buffalo River State Park was an Arkansas state park, established in 1938, that was absorbed into Buffalo National River when the Federal park was established in 1972. The area is now known as Buffalo Point. The new state park was developed with Civilian Conservation Corps labor in 1939 with the construction of park structures to plans from the National Park Service Branch of Plans and Designs. The CCC structures now comprise a historic district on the National Register of Historic Places. One park highlight is a 3-mile trail. The Indian Rockhouse Trail is wonderfully scenic with many great points of interest including sculpted bedrock, a waterfall, a former zinc mine, and the Indian Rockhouse Cave. Bull Shoals Lake
Bull Shoals Lake is an artificial lake or reservoir in the Ozark Mountains of northern Arkansas and southern Missouri. It has hundreds of miles of lake arms and coves, and common activities include boating, water sports, swimming, and fishing. Nineteen developed parks around the shoreline provide campgrounds, boat launches, swim areas, and marinas. History Bull Shoals Dam was created to impound the White River by one of the largest concrete dams in the United States and the 5th largest dam in the world at its inception. Work on the dam began in 1947, was completed in 1951 and dedicated by President Harry S. Truman in 1952.
