Arkansas Highway 115
Highway 115 (AR 115, Ark. 115, and Hwy. 115) is a state highway in Northeast Arkansas. The route begins at US Highway 167 and Highway 58 in Cave City and runs northeast to Missouri Route 21 near Doniphan, Missouri, including a concurrency with US 62/ US 412 between Imboden and Pocahontas. The highway is maintained by the Arkansas Department of Transportation (ARDOT). One of the original 1926 Arkansas state highways, modern-day Highway 115 was established as State Road 79 between Cave City and Missouri, largely along its modern alignment. The alignment was rerouted between Imboden to Smithville in 1928, and an overlap was created between Pocahontas and Imboden when US 62 was designated across the state in 1931. Cave City, Arkansas
Cave City is a city in Independence and Sharp counties in the U.S. state of Arkansas. The population was 1,904 at the 2010 census. The city was named for a large cave underneath the Crystal River Tourist Camp, which is the oldest motor court in Arkansas. Cave City is known for its award-winning "world's sweetest" watermelons and holds an annual watermelon festival in July. Geography Cave City is located at (35.948087, -91.550952). The town is centered on, and partially located above, the Crystal River, an underground body of water located in the multi-room Crystal River Cave, for which the town is named. Highway 251 (AR 251, Ark. 251, and Hwy. 251) is a north–south state highway in Randolph County, Arkansas. The highway begins near Pocahontas and runs north to the Missouri state line. Smithville Public School Building
The Smithville Public School Building is a historic school building on Arkansas Highway 117 in the small community of Smithville, Arkansas. It is a single-story T-shaped fieldstone structure with a cross-gable roof. History It was built in 1936 with funding from the Works Progress Administration in an attempt to bolster the community's economy, which had been affected by the Great Depression, and by the loss of its status as county seat when Sharp County was separated from Lawrence County. In the 1980s, the building was in poor condition, so state legislators distributed 140,000 dollars to repair the building. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on January 11, 1993. It now functions as a fire station. Smithville, Arkansas
Smithville is a town in Lawrence County, Arkansas, United States. The population was 78 at the 2010 census. History Euro-American settlers first came to the area of Smithville in 1808. Smithville became the county seat of modern-day Lawrence County in 1837. The county seat was later moved to Powhatan in 1869, after the Civil War. This was done in part to take advantage of riverboat commerce along the Black River. Smithville was the nearest town to the final shoot-out between law enforcement and the infamous tax fugitive Gordon Kahl on June 2, 1983, in which Lawrence County Sheriff Harold Gene Matthews was also killed. Smithville lies a few miles south of the actual shootout location. Geography Smithville is located in western Lawrence County at (36.080031, -91.303781). The Strawberry River is a tributary of the Black River, about long, in northern Arkansas in the United States. Via the Black and White rivers, it is part of the watershed of the Mississippi River.
