Arkansas ( ) is a landlocked state in the South Central United States. It is bordered by Missouri to the north, Tennessee and Mississippi to the east, Louisiana to the south, and Texas and Oklahoma to the west. Its name is from the Osage language, a Dhegiha Siouan language, and referred to their relatives, the Quapaw people. Arkansas State Library is a special library that operates as a state agency under the Arkansas Department of Education within Arkansas state government. It provides information resources for state agencies, legislators and legislative staffs. In addition, the Arkansas State Library provides guidance and support for the development of local public libraries and library services. Finally, the ASL provides resources, services, and leadership for the educational, informational and cultural needs of Arkansas citizens. History The Arkansas General Assembly created the Arkansas Library Commission in 1935. Funding began in 1937. The commission operated from headquarters in Little Rock. Arkansas School For The Deaf
Founded in 1850, the Arkansas School for the Deaf (ASD) is a state-run public school in Little Rock, Arkansas, United States, serving deaf and hard of hearing students through residential, day school, and part-time enrollment programs. The school offers preschool through high school, and is affiliated with the Arkansas Association of the Deaf (AAD) and the National Association of the Deaf (NAD). The school is located near the Arkansas School for the Blind (ASB) and both are administered by a five-member panel known as the Board of Trustees ASB-ASD. The Arkansas School for the Blind and Visually Impaired (ASB or ASBVI), is a state-run public school in Little Rock, Arkansas, United States, serving blind and vision impaired students of kindergarten through high school grades through residential, day school, and part-time enrollment programs. History Opened in 1859, the school was founded as ''The Institute for the Education of the Blind'' by Reverend Haucke, a blind Baptist minister. Originally located in Arkadelphia, Arkansas, the school moved in 1868 to Little Rock in the facility now used as the Arkansas Governor's Mansion. By 1877, the school was renamed to its present-day Arkansas School for the Blind. On October 9, 1939, construction of the school's new campus at 2600 West Markham Street was complete and dedicated to Helen Keller, who was in attendance. Arkansas Appeal Tribunal
The Arkansas Appeal Tribunal is a state agency of the Government of Arkansas. Persons unsatisfied with unemployment insurance (UI) determinations issued by the Arkansas Division of Workforce Services may appeal to the Arkansas Appeal Tribunal within 20 days. The Tribunal holds hearings. The Appeal Tribunal is based in Little Rock. In 1989, the Tribunal had a staff of about 30 and was funded by, but separate from, the Arkansas Employment Security Division. The Arkansas Employment Security Division was renamed the Arkansas Department of Workforce Services (ADWS) in 2005. In 2019, following a state government reorganization, the Department of Workforce Services became the Division of Workforce Services within the Arkansas Department of Commerce.
