The Arkansas Baptist State Convention (ABSC) was founded on September 21, 1848, at Brownsville Church in Tulip, Arkansas, Tulip in Dallas County, Arkansas as an affiliate of the Southern Baptist Convention. The first president was Isaac Perkins, and its first secretary was Samuel Stevenson. James Philip Eagle, governor of Arkansas and later president of the Southern Baptist Convention, presided over the Arkansas convention for 21 years. Tulip, Arkansas
Tulip is an unincorporated area, unincorporated community in Dallas County, Arkansas, Dallas County, Arkansas, United States. The community is on Arkansas Highway 9 west of Carthage, Arkansas, Carthage. Tulip was settled shortly after Arkansas became a state in 1836. It was originally known as both Brownsville and Smithville after local settlers before adopting its current name, which came from either the area's large tulip tree population or the mnemonic for the five points of Calvinism. The community prospered in its early years; a local pottery industry developed, and the Arkansas Military Institute and Tulip Female Collegiate Seminary opened there in 1850. In the same year, the state's first monthly magazine, appropriately named the ''Tulip'', began publication in Tulip. Williams Baptist College
Williams Baptist University is a private Baptist university in Walnut Ridge, Arkansas. Founded in 1941, this institution began as a two-year school. It began granting bachelor's degrees in 1984 and master's degrees in 2017. The name of the school was changed in 1991 from Southern Baptist College to Williams Baptist College in honor of its founder and first president, H. E. Williams. In 2018, its name was changed to Williams Baptist University. Williams has been accredited since 1963 by the Higher Learning Commission. Ouachita Baptist University (OBU) is a private Baptist university in Arkadelphia, Arkansas. The university's name is taken from the Ouachita (pronounced WAH-shi-tah) River, which forms the eastern campus boundary. It is affiliated with the Arkansas Baptist State Convention.
