Ariel Pestano
Ariel Osvaldo Pestano Valdés (born January 31, 1974), better known as ''El Veterano'' ("The Veteran"), is a Cuban baseball catcher, and is known as one of the greatest catchers in Cuban history. He has won both silver and gold medals in the Olympic Games and also played catcher on Cuba's World Baseball Classic team in March 2006 and March 2009. Catcher is a Baseball positions, position in baseball and softball. 2003 Pan American Games
The 2003 Pan American Games were held in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, from August 1 to 17, 2003. The successful bid for the games was made in the mid-1990s, when Dominican Republic had one of the highest growth rates in Latin America. All 42 PASO countries and over 5,223 athletes pre-registered for the participation in the XIV Pan American Games. An additional 2,425 trainers and delegates attended. The United States pre-registered the most athletes (713) and Saint Lucia entered the least (6). The host country entered 562 athletes. Baseball at the 1999 Pan American Games was held between July 25 and August 2 in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. A total of nine teams competed: Brazil, Canada, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Guatemala, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, and the United States. The primary venue for this competition was CanWest Global Park, while Stonewall Quarry Park in Stonewall, Manitoba, was used as a secondary venue. Cuba entered the competition as the seven-time defending champions, having won each gold medal dating back to 1971. They successfully defended their title, with the United States finishing second. The 1999 games were the first time professional baseball players were allowed to participate in the Pan American Games, and the top two teams qualified for the 2000 Summer Olympics. The 1999 Pan American Games, officially the XIII Pan American Games or the 13th Pan American Games, was a major international multi-sport event that was held from July 23 to August 8, 1999, in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada and surrounding towns and cities. Canoeing competitions started the day before the games officially begun. Approximately 5,000 athletes from 42 nations participated at the games. The 2006 IBAF Intercontinental Cup was held in Taichung, Taiwan from November 9 through the 19th. Eight countries contested the tournament, which was played at Taichung Baseball Field and the newly built Taichung Intercontinental Baseball Stadium. The participating countries were Cuba, Australia, Italy, the Netherlands, Japan, South Korea, the Philippines in addition to the hosts from Chinese Taipei (Taiwan). The 1999 IBAF Intercontinental Cup was held in Australia from 3 to 14 November 1999. Eight countries contested the tournament, and has been the only Intercontinental Cup hosted in the Southern Hemisphere. The eight participating countries were Cuba, Australia, Italy, the Netherlands, Japan, South Korea, United States and Chinese Taipei. 2009 Baseball World Cup
The 2009 Baseball World Cup (BWC) was the 38th international Men's amateur baseball tournament. The tournament was sanctioned by the International Baseball Federation, which titled it the Amateur World Series from the 1938 tournament through the 1986 AWS. The 2009 tournament was held, for the first time, across a continent — with games played in 27 cities across eight European countries, from September 9 to 27. The final was a repeat of the previous BWC final, with the United States again defeating Cuba, winning its fourth title.
