Ariel Borrero
Ariel Borrero Alfonso (born January 1, 1972, in Santa Clara) is the starting first baseman for the Cuban national baseball team and for Villa Clara of the Cuban National Series. In the 2005-06 Cuban National Series, the left-handed Borrero hit .346 to lead Villa Clara. He led the league in doubles and triples in 1999-2000 and 2001, respectively. Baseball is a bat-and-ball sport played between two teams of nine players each, taking turns batting and fielding. The 2006 World Baseball Classic (WBC) was the inaugural tournament between national baseball teams that included players from Major League Baseball. It was held from March 3 to 20 in stadiums that are in and around Tokyo, Japan; San Juan, Puerto Rico; Lake Buena Vista, Florida; Phoenix, Arizona; Scottsdale, Arizona; Anaheim, California; and San Diego, California. In baseball, a triple is the act of a batter safely reaching third base after hitting the ball, with neither the benefit of a fielder's misplay (see error) nor another runner being put out on a fielder's choice. A triple is sometimes called a "three-bagger" or "three-base hit". For statistical and scorekeeping purposes it is denoted by 3B. The Baseball World Cup was an international tournament where national baseball teams from around the world competed. It was sanctioned by the International Baseball Federation (IBAF). Along with the World Baseball Classic, it was one of two active tournaments considered by the IBAF to be a major world championship.
