Areia Branca Beach ( pt, Praia da Areia Branca, tet, Tasi-ibun Areia Branca) is a public beach on the north eastern shore of the Bay of Dili, in the ''suco'' of , East Timor. It is very popular with both local residents and tourists. Etymology The beach's name, , is Portuguese for "white sand". Geography As its name indicates, the beach is white and sandy. It is about long, and located close to the north eastern end of the Bay of Dili, east of the centre of Dili, capital city of East Timor. On its land side, the beach is fringed by shady trees, and overlooked by steep low hills creating a dramatic backdrop. The hills are covered with ''Eucalyptus alba'' savanna woodland, in which small stands of tropical dry forest are developing. The beach and hills are all part of the Areia Branca no Dolok Oan Important Bird Area. Port Of Dili
The Port of Dili ( pt, Porto de Díli, tet, Portu Díli) is a seaport in Dili, East Timor. Prior to 30 September 2022, it was the main and only international port of entry to East Timor. On that day, its container operations were transferred to the Tibar Bay Port. Since then, the Port of Dili's facilities have been open only to domestic passenger ships and cruise ships carrying international tourists. Geography The port is located in the neighbourhood of Farol, which is within the ''suco'' of . It is on the north side of central Dili, and at the southern extremity of the Bay of Dili, facing Ombai Strait. The site is suitable for a port because a natural reef along its perimeter provides protection from severe weather. One Dollar Beach or Dollar Beach ( pt, Praia do Dólar, tet, Tasi-ibun Dolar) is a public beach on the north coast of East Timor, east north east of Dili, the capital city. It is long, white, sandy and clean, and also frequently deserted, yet popular with beach users at other times. Etymology The beach's name dates back only to about the start of this century, when East Timor was a United Nations protectorate. At that time, local people would charge visitors for every car arriving and parking at the beach. Jesus Backside Beach or Dolok Oan Beach ( pt, Praia dos Portugueses, tet, Dolok Oan) is a public beach located in the ''suco'' of Hera, a short distance north east of Dili, East Timor. The beach forms part of the south shore of Wetar Strait, immediately to the east of Cape Fatucama. Etymology The beach's "precise but utterly uncharming" most commonly used English language name, Jesus Backside Beach, alludes to the colossal ''Cristo Rei of Dili'' statue located immediately to its west. As the statue faces in a westerly direction, it presents its rear or back side to the beach. 2008 East Timorese Assassination Attempts
Rebel soldiers of the Timor Leste Defence Force invaded the homes of the President and Prime Minister of East Timor on 11 February 2008, leading to the shooting and serious wounding of President José Ramos-Horta and the shooting up of the car of Prime Minister Xanana Gusmão. Two rebel soldiers, including leader Alfredo Reinado, were shot dead by presidential security forces. Reinado had deserted the military in 2006 along with 600 others after complaining of regional discrimination in promotions, sparking the 2006 East Timorese crisis. The attacks have been variously interpreted as attempted assassinations, attempted kidnappings and an attempted coup d'état. The rebels' intentions remain unknown. José Manuel Ramos-Horta (; born 26 December 1949) is an East Timorese politician currently serving as president of East Timor since May 2022. He previously served as president from 20 May 2007 to 20 May 2012. Previously he was Minister of Foreign Affairs from 2002 to 2006 and Prime Minister from 2006 to 2007. He is a co-recipient of the 1996 Nobel Peace Prize, along with Carlos Filipe Ximenes Belo, for working "towards a just and peaceful solution to the conflict in East Timor". As a founder and former member of Fretilin, Ramos-Horta served as the exiled spokesman for the East Timorese resistance during the years of the Indonesian occupation of East Timor (1975–1999).
