Ards And North Down Borough Council
Ards and North Down Borough Council is a local authority in Northern Ireland that was established on 1 April 2015. It replaced Ards Borough Council and North Down Borough Council. The first elections to the authority were on 22 May 2014 and it acted as a shadow authority, prior to the creation of the Ards and North Down district on 1 April 2015. The district was originally called "North Down and Ards" but the council was known as "Ards and North Down District Council". Councillors on the transitional shadow authority (prior to the council's official creation) voted on 15 December 2014 to submit an application to the Department of the Environment to change the name to ''East Coast Borough Council'' with effect from 1 April 2015. Districts Of Northern Ireland
Northern Ireland is divided into 11 districts for local government purposes. In Northern Ireland, local councils do not carry out the same range of functions as those in the rest of the United Kingdom; for example they have no responsibility for education, road-building or housing (although they do nominate members to the advisory Northern Ireland Housing Council). Their functions include planning, waste and recycling services, leisure and community services, building control and local economic and cultural development. Rachel Woods
Rachel Woods (born 15 April 1989) is a Northern Irish politician who served as the Green Party Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) for North Down from 2019 to 2022, having replaced the party's former leader, Steven Agnew. Early life Woods is from Holywood, Co. Down. She holds a degree in history and a master's from Queen's University Belfast. From the age of 15, Woods worked in hospitality as a cleaner, chef and bar worker. Philip Smith (born 7 November 1967) is an Ulster Unionist Party (UUP) politician who was a Member of the Northern Ireland Assembly (MLA) for Strangford from 2016 to 2017. Bangor Castle
Bangor Castle is a country house situated in Castle Park in Bangor, County Down, Northern Ireland. The building, which is also referred to as Bangor Town Hall and is now used as the offices of Ards and North Down Borough Council, is a Grade A listed building. History The site was first occupied by Bangor Abbey which was founded by St. Comgall in 558 and was home to Franciscan friars until the dissolution of the monasteries in 1542. A mansion was built on the site for Sir James Hamilton, who had acted as an agent and informant for King James I, in around 1611: it was remodelled in the late 18th century. The current building was commissioned by The Hon Robert Edward Ward, who had served as High Sheriff of Down for 1842 and was a brother of the 3rd Viscount Bangor. It was designed by the Scottish architect, William Burn, in the Jacobethan style, built in ashlar stone and was completed in 1852.
