Ardmona, Victoria
Ardmona is a locality in the Goulburn Valley of central Victoria, Australia. It is 10 km west of Shepparton and located in the City of Greater Shepparton local government area. The Midland Highway passes through the south of Ardmona. The town takes its name from a farm owned by Charles and Lochie McDonald which was purchased by a private syndicate in 1886 and subdivided to become Victoria's first irrigated settlement. One of the five members of the syndicate was horticulturist and journalist John West. Ardmona has several amenities, including a corner shop, a primary school and a football field. SPC Ardmona, an Australian company, has its main factory located in nearby Shepparton. Ardmona used to have an Anglican church however it was sold in 2014 after being disused for more than five years. Electoral District Of Shepparton
The electoral district of Shepparton is a rural Lower House electoral district of the Victorian Parliament. It is located within the Northern Victoria Region of the Legislative Council. The electoral district of Shepparton covers an area of 3,289 square kilometres. Shepparton includes the country towns of Ardmona, Barmah, Congupna, Dookie, Katunga, Kialla, Mooroopna, Nathalia, Picola, Shepparton, Strathmerton, Tallygaroopna, Tatura and Toolamba. The district also includes the Barmah National Park. It is a rich agricultural area with orchards, vineyards and dairy farms. Much of the electorate is an important irrigation area served by water from the Main East Goulburn Channel. The rest of the land is used for pasture, fodder crops and cattle and sheep grazing. The Goulburn Valley is a sub-region, part of the Hume region of the Australian state of Victoria. The sub-region consists of those areas in the catchment of the Goulburn River and other nearby streams, and is part of the Murray-Darling Basin. The Goulburn Valley is bordered on the south by the Great Dividing Range and to the north by the Murray River, the state border with New South Wales. John West (horticulturist)
John West (23 August 1856 – 22 February 1926) was an Australian horticulturist, journalist and irrigation pioneer. West was born at Mount Ararat to goldminer Isaac West and Ann McMann; he received what he described as "a very imperfect education". A stablehand from the age of thirteen, he worked at Brunnings Nursery in St Kilda, attending night school to qualify as a schoolteacher and teaching at Tatura and Murungi in the Goulburn Valley. He campaigned for vine and fruit culture after rust destroyed a wheat crop in 1878 and became farming editor of the ''Shepparton News''. He married Milvina Gardiner on 7 April 1882 near Bacchus Marsh. He also printed the ''Goulburn Valley Yeoman'' and the ''Euroa Advertiser'' and wrote for the '' Argus'' and the '' Australasian''. West was also one of the initial syndicate of five who established the first irrigation settlement in Victoria at Ardmona. Ardmona Football Club
The Ardmona Football Club is an Australian rules football club from the Goulburn Valley town of Ardmona, Victoria, Ardmona, Victoria (Australia), Victoria, Australia that plays in the Kyabram & District Football League. History Ardmona Football Club was established in 1920 by the local young men of Ardmona, playing in Wednesday afternoon competitions at the primary school grounds. An attempt was made in 1920 to secure a ground for the club but the deal was not brought to completion. A letter to the editor in the Shepparton Advertiser in November 1921 claimed that Ardmona needed a recreation ground for the locals to utilize.
