Ardee Baroque Festival
The Ardee Baroque Festival is an annual music festival, covering baroque music from the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, which takes place each November in Ardee, County Louth in Ireland. The festival, which was first held in 2004, hosted its "20th season" in November 2023. The festival was initially founded in collaboration with the Irish Baroque Orchestra (IBO). The IBO has previously been "orchestra in residence" at the festival, attending for the preceding week to undertake rehearsals, education outreach programs and other performances. The festival has also previously hosted performances from Dunedin Consort and New York Polyphony. Performances have been held in several venues within Ardee, including in Ardee Castle. The board of Ardee Baroque Festival is drawn from the local community and collaborates with the Arts Service of Louth County Council in managing and marketing the festival. Baroque Music
Baroque music ( or ) refers to the period or dominant style of Western classical music composed from about 1600 to 1750. The Baroque style followed the Renaissance period, and was followed in turn by the Classical period after a short transition, the galant style. Ardee
Ardee (; , ) is a town and townland in County Louth, Ireland. It is located at the intersection of the N2, N52, and N33 roads. The town shows evidence of development from the thirteenth century onward but as a result of the continued development of the town since then much of the fabric of the medieval town has been removed. Ardee is on the banks of the River Dee and is equidistant between the county's two biggest towns - approximately 20 km (12 mi) from Dundalk and Drogheda, while it is also close to Slane and Carrickmacross. In the 20 years between the 1996 and 2016 census, the population of Ardee increased by approximately 30%, from 3,791 to 4,928 inhabitants. Irish Baroque Orchestra
The Irish Baroque Orchestra is an early music ensemble based in Ireland. Irish Baroque Orchestra is Ireland’s only professional period instrument orchestra. It was established in 1996 by Mark Duley and Thérèse Timoney. The artistic director is currently Peter Whelan. The orchestra presents a season of concerts annually along with a number of one off events. The orchestra is funded annually by the Arts Council of Ireland, Dublin City Council and is a resident of the National Concert Hall, Dublin. Irish Baroque Orchestra's annual sell out performances of Handel's Messiah are a highlight of Ireland's musical calendar. Dunedin Consort
Dunedin Consort is Scotland's leading baroque ensemble based in Edinburgh, Scotland, recognised for its vivid and insightful performances and recordings. Formed in 1995 and named after Din Eidyn, the ancient Brittonic Celtic name of Edinburgh Castle, Dunedin Consort’s ambition is to make early music newly relevant to the present day. New York Polyphony
New York Polyphony is a male classical vocal quartet based in New York City. Music of the Renaissance and Medieval music periods constitutes the core of the ensemble’s repertoire, but increasingly, new music occupies an important place both in performance and on recording. Ardee Castle
Ardee Castle also known as St. Leger's Castle, is a fortified medieval tower house in Ireland. Built in the 15th century, the castle was used as a prison during the 17th and 18th centuries and became Ardee's district courthouse until June 2006 when a specialised facility took its place. Ardee Castle is the largest fortified medieval Tower House in Ireland or Britain. The castle was originally built by Roger de Peppard in 1207, but not much is left from the original walls.
