Arcola, Louisiana
Arcola is an unincorporated community in Tangipahoa Parish, Louisiana. Etymology Some local residents believe that during the New Orleans yellow fever epidemic in the year 1853 several Italian families settled in the area. It is speculated that these first settlers named the village after Arcole a small comune in the province of Verona, Italy. Prospect Hill In the mid 1800s Arcola was also named Prospect Hill. In the year 1851 the New Orleans, Jackson and Great Northern railway was constructed and passed through the community. Some have speculated that the railroad gave the name "Prospect Hill" to the area. A local resident attempted to use this as a defense to avoid paying back a promissory note. New Orleans, Jackson And Great Northern
The New Orleans, Jackson and Great Northern was a gauge railway originally commissioned by the State of Illinois, with both Stephen Douglas and Abraham Lincoln being among its supporters in the 1851 Illinois Legislature. It connected Canton, Mississippi, with New Orleans and was completed just prior to the American Civil War, in which it served strategic interests, especially for the Confederacy. Arcole (pronounced ), historically also known as Arcola, is a ''comune'' with 5,274 inhabitants in the province of Verona. It is known as the site of the Battle of the Bridge of Arcole. History Between 15–17 November 1796, the Battle of Arcole took place. Napoleon Bonaparte, recently appointed commander of the French Army of Italy (France), Army of Italy, led a rapid and conclusive attack through Italy as part of the French Revolutionary Wars. In April and May of that year he had defeated Piedmont army and driven the Holy Roman Empire, Austrian army out of almost all of Northern Italy.
