Arco (lamp)
The Arco lamp is a modern overhead lamp designed by brothers Pier Giacomo and Achille Castiglioni for Flos in 1962. The lamp is characterized by a suspended spun aluminum pendant attached to an upright slab of Carrara marble via a large, arching arm made of stainless steel. The lamp has been in constant production since its original release in 1962. History Intellectual property case In November 2006, Flos brought charges against Semeraro Casa & Famiglia SpA, claiming that the company had violated copyright law in selling a similar lamp named "Fluida." Advocate General Yves Bot deemed that while the Fluida lamp was created in imitation of the original Arco design, production of the product was legal as the original design had since entered the public domain. Pier Giacomo Castiglioni
Pier Giacomo Castiglioni (22 April 1913–27 November 1968) was an Italian architect and designer. Early life and education Castiglioni was born on 22 April 1913 in Milan, in Lombardy in northern Italy. He was the second son of the sculptor Giannino Castiglioni and his wife Livia Bolla. Castiglioni studied architecture at the Politecnico di Milano and graduated in 1937. His elder brother Livio and younger brother Achille were also architects. Castiglioni married Maria Coduri de Cartosio on 30 December 1942. Work and career In 1937 or 1938 he started an architectural design practice with his brother Livio and Luigi Caccia Dominioni. Amongst the designs produced by the practice were the first Italian bakelite radio for Phonola. The studio closed in 1940. Achille Castiglioni
Achille Castiglioni (; 16 February 1918 – 2 December 2002) was an Italian architect and designer of furniture, lighting, radiograms and other objects. As a professor of design, he advised his students "If you are not curious, forget it. If you are not interested in others, what they do and how they act, then being a designer is not the right job for you." Early life and education Castiglioni was born on 16 February 1918 in Milan, in Lombardy in northern Italy. He was the third son of the sculptor Giannino Castiglioni and his wife Livia Bolla. His elder brothers Livio and Pier Giacomo were both architects. Castiglioni studied classics at the Liceo Classico Giuseppe Parini in Milan, but switched to study the arts at the Liceo artistico di Brera. Carrara marble, Luna marble to the Romans, is a type of white or blue-grey marble popular for use in sculpture and building decor. It has been quarried since Roman times in the mountains just outside the city of Carrara in the province of Massa and Carrara in the Lunigiana, the northernmost tip of modern-day Tuscany, Italy. Yves Bot (August 22, 1947 – June 9, 2019) was a French magistrate who served until his death as Advocate General at the European Court of Justice. Biography In 1995, Yves Bot was nominated by Jacques Toubon, then Minister of Justice, as prosecutor of Nanterre. He directed the courthouse of Le Mans and worked as a counsellor to Pierre Méhaignerie at the Ministry of Justice. Between October 2002 and October 2004, he was ''procureur'' (head of the prosecution) of the Paris Court of large claims (''Tribunal de grande instance'').
