Archivo General De La Nación De República Dominicana
The General Archive of the Nation (Spanish: ''Archivo General de la Nación'') of the Dominican Republic is the country's national archive, decentralized from the Ministry of Culture. It is in charge of organizing and preserving all documents relevant to the history of the Dominican Republic. It was created on 1935 by Law no. 912. On June 28, 2000, by Law no. 41-00, the institution was transferred to the newly created Secretary of State of Culture. Years later, on 2008, the Archive was given autonomy and became an agency of its own right, by Law no. 481-08. Its headquarters are located near the University Zone of Santo Domingo. Its director general is historian Roberto Cassá, since August 16, 2020. From its website, you can access a series of publications and digitized documents. Roberto Cassá
Roberto Cassá Bernaldo de Quirós (born 12 September 1948) is a Dominican historian, writer, and educator. He is the president of the Dominican Academy of History and member of the Academy of Sciences of the Dominican Republic and the Association of Historians of Latin America and the Caribbean. Cassá is Director of the General Archive of the Nation. The Ministry of Culture (Spanish: ''Ministerio de Cultura'') of the Dominican Republic is a government institution in charge of cultural activities, cultural heritage and creative manifestations. History Of The Dominican Republic
The recorded history of the Dominican Republic began in 1492 when the Genoa-born navigator Christopher Columbus, working for the Crown of Castile, happened upon a large island in the region of the western Atlantic Ocean that later came to be known as the Caribbean. It was inhabited by the Taíno, an Arawakan people, who called the eastern part of the island Quisqueya (Kiskeya), meaning "mother of all lands." Columbus promptly claimed the island for the Spanish Crown, naming it La Isla Española ("the Spanish Island"), later Latinized to Hispaniola. The Taínos were nearly wiped out due to European infectious diseases. The Universidad Autónoma de Santo Domingo (UASD) (Autonomous University of Santo Domingo) is the public university system in the Dominican Republic with its flagship campus in the Ciudad Universitaria (lit. University City) neighborhood of Santo Domingo and with regional campuses in many cities of the Republic. It was founded by Jose Gabriel Garcia and Emiliano Tejera in 1866 as the Professional Institute, replacing the former Universidad Santo Tomás de Aquino, one of the first universities of the Western Hemisphere (Americas), which was founded unofficially by a Papal bull in 1538, officially by royal decree in 1558, and closed in 1822.
