Archie Sykes
Archibald J. Sykes (24 September 1866 – 26 August 1957) was an Australian rules footballer who played for the Essendon Football Club in the Victorian Football League (VFL), and was involved in the club's 1897 premiership win. Sykes played for Essendon for seven years in the then VFA in 1889–1890 and 1892–1896, and in 1891, he played for Fremantle in Western Australia. Sykes was involved in three Essendon VFA premierships in 1892–1894. After Essendon joined the new Victorian Football League, Sykes played with the Bombers for one season (1897) where they won the premiership, the fourth of his career, before retiring at the end of 1897. The Victoria Australian rules football team, known colloquially as the Big V, is the state representative side of Victoria, Australia, in the sport of Australian rules football. The Big V has a proud history, dominating the first 100 years of intercolonial-interstate football, and being the most successful state in State of Origin. After the change to State of Origin rules, the results with the other main Australian football states became more even. Victoria has a long and intense rivalry with South Australia and Western Australia. The Essendon Football Club, nicknamed the Bombers, is a professional Australian rules football club. The club plays in the Australian Football League (AFL), the game's premier competition. The club was formed by the McCracken family in their Ascot Vale home "Alisa", and while the exact date is unknown, it is generally accepted to have been in 1872. The club's first recorded game took place on 7 June 1873 against a Carlton Second 20. Victorian Football Association
The Victorian Football League (VFL) is an Australian rules football league in Australia serving as one of the second-tier regional semi-professional competitions which sit underneath the fully professional Australian Football League (AFL). It includes teams from clubs based in the eastern states of Australia: Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland, and includes reserves teams for the east coast AFL clubs. The league evolved from the former Victorian Football Association (VFA), and it has been known by its current name since 1996. For historical purposes, the present-day VFL is referred to as the VFA/VFL, to distinguish it from the present-day Australian Football League, which in turn was known until 1990 as the Victorian Football League and is thus referred to as the VFL/AFL. Geelong West Football Club
The Geelong West St Peters Football Club was an Australian rules football club that last competed in the Geelong Football League (GFL) from 1989 until the end of the 2016 season. Prior to its merger with St Peters Football Club in 1989, the club played in the Victorian Football Association (VFA) from 1963 until 1988. Geelong West, nicknamed the 'Roosters', wore white and red during its time in the Association. At the conclusion of the 2016 season, the Roosters merged with co-tenants Geelong West Sports Club to form a new entity, Geelong West Giants. The Victorian Football League's 1897 finals series determined the top four final positions of the 1897 VFL season. It began on the weekend of August 21, 1897, and ended on the weekend of September 3, 1897. Essendon was crowned the 1897 VFL premiers, finishing the finals series on top of the mini-ladder. Victorian Football League (1897–1989)
The Australian Football League (AFL) is the only fully professional competition of Australian rules football. Through the AFL Commission, the AFL also serves as the sport's governing body and is responsible for controlling the laws of the game. Originally known as the Victorian Football League (VFL), it was founded in 1896 as a breakaway competition from the Victorian Football Association (VFA), with its inaugural season commencing the following year. The VFL, aiming to become a national competition, began expanding beyond Victoria to other Australian states in the 1980s, and changed its name to the AFL in 1990.
