Archibald Kennedy, 3rd Marquess of Ailsa (1 September 1847 – 9 April 1938) was a Scottish peer. Early life Archibald was born on 1 September 1847, the eldest of three sons born to Julia ( née Jephson), Marchioness of Ailsa, and Archibald Kennedy, 2nd Marquess of Ailsa. Among his siblings was Maj Lord Alexander Kennedy, Lord John Kennedy, Lady Julia Alice Kennedy, Lady Evelyn Anne Kennedy, and Lady Constance Eleanor Kennedy. His father was the eldest son of Archibald Kennedy, Earl of Cassilis, himself the oldest son of Archibald Kennedy, 1st Marquess of Ailsa. His mother was the second daughter of Sir Richard Jephson, 1st Baronet and the former Charlotte Rochfort Smith. Career As a young man, he served as an officer in the Coldstream Guards. In 1885, he founded the Ailsa Shipbuilding Company, which was based in Troon and Ayr, Ayrshire. Culzean Castle
Culzean Castle ( , see yogh; sco, Cullain) is a castle overlooking the Firth of Clyde, near Maybole, Carrick, in South Ayrshire, on the west coast of Scotland. It is the former home of the Marquess of Ailsa, the chief of Clan Kennedy, but is now owned by the National Trust for Scotland. The clifftop castle lies within the Culzean Castle Country Park and is opened to the public. From 1972 until 2015, an illustration of the castle was featured on the reverse side of five pound notes issued by the Royal Bank of Scotland. As of 2021, the castle was available for rent. Angus Kennedy, 6th Marquess of Ailsa (28 October 1882 – 31 May 1957) was a British peerage, Scottish peer, the son of Archibald Kennedy, 3rd Marquess of Ailsa. He was known as Lord Angus Kennedy until 1956. He was educated at Eton College. He gained the rank of lieutenant in the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve and the rank of captain in the Royal Air Force. John Browne, 5th Baron Kilmaine
John Edward Deane Browne, 5th Baron Kilmaine (18 March 1878 – 27 August 1946) was an Anglo-Irish politician and landowner. He sat in the House of Lords, within the Imperial British Parliament, as an Irish representative peer (1911–1946). Biography Browne was born in England, the only child of Francis Browne, 4th Baron Kilmaine and Alice Emily Shute. He was the nephew of Sir Cameron Shute. He was educated at Magdalen College, Oxford, and abroad. His father, who reportedly suffered from "acute nervous disease" for many years, died by suicide in 1907, when he jumped out of a hotel room in Paris, where he had gone for treatment. Admiral Sir John Kennedy Erskine Baird, KCB was an officer in the Royal Navy, who is chiefly remembered for commanding the losing side in the 1888 annual naval manoeuvres. Early life Baird was born on 16 September 1832, the fourth son of Sir David Baird, 2nd Baronet (see Baird baronets) and Lady Anne Baird (née Kennedy). Charles Kennedy, 5th Marquess of Ailsa (10 April 1875 – 1 June 1956) was a Scottish peer, the son of Archibald Kennedy, 3rd Marquess of Ailsa. He was known as Lord Charles Kennedy until 1943, when he inherited the marquessate. Biography Lord Charles was educated at Eton and the Royal Agricultural College, Cirencester before taking up a military career. On 27 January 1894, he was commissioned a second lieutenant in the 3rd Battalion, Royal Scots Fusiliers, but resigned his commission on 5 May. During the Second Boer War, he fought as a captain in an Australian regiment, the Prince of Wales' Light Horse, and received the Queen's South Africa Medal with three clasps. After the Boer War, Kennedy moved to the United States, living in Wyoming through about 1910, and then in Nevada, Missouri and Davenport, Iowa. Sir Mark John MacTaggart-Stewart, 1st Baronet (12 October 1834 – 26 September 1923), known as Mark John Stewart until 1880, was a Scottish Conservative Member of Parliament in the House of Commons of the United Kingdom.
