Archibald Fraser (politician)
Archibald McDonald Fraser (6 June 1896 – 30 August 1979) was an Australian politician. He was born in Charters Towers to engine driver Archibald Gibson Fraser and Julia Riordan. He grew up in Kalgoorlie and was educated in Perth, receiving a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Western Australia. He subsequently studied at the University of Melbourne, where he received a Bachelor of Law. He was a barrister from 1921. On 18 December 1924 he married Gertrude Mary Prendergast, with whom he had five children. He had joined the Labor Party in 1923, and in 1940 was elected to the Victorian Legislative Council for Melbourne North Province. From 1945 to 1947 he was Assistant Minister of Lands and Water Supply, and from 1952 to 1954 he was Minister of Labour and Mines. In 1954 he resigned from parliament to become a judge on the County Court and chairman of the Victorian Licensing Court. He retired in 1968 and died at South Yarra in 1979. Charters Towers, Queensland
Charters Towers is a rural town in the Charters Towers Region, Queensland, Australia. It is by road south-west from Townsville on the Flinders Highway. During the last quarter of the 19th century, the town boomed as the rich gold deposits under the city were developed. After becoming uneconomical in the 20th century, profitable mining operations have commenced once again. In the , Charters Towers had a population of 8,120 people. Esmond Kiernan
Esmond Laurence Kiernan (25 December 1881 – 19 April 1967) was an Australian politician. He was born in Fitzroy to schoolteachers John Joseph Kiernan and Margaret MacDonald. He attended state schools and became a furniture retailer. He was a founding member of the Clerks' Union and joined the Labor Party in 1909. He was a follower of Henry George and an opponent of capital punishment and, from 1917 to 1920, served on Collingwood City Council. On 31 January 1917, he married Eileen Mary Harrison, with whom he had four children. In 1919, Kiernan was elected to the Victorian Legislative Council for Melbourne North Province. From 1929 to 1932 he was an Honorary Minister in the Hogan Labor government and, for a short period, was Minister for Sustenance. Jack Little (Australian Politician)
John Albert Little (13 October 1914 – 25 November 1988) was an Australian politician. Born in Maryborough, Victoria, he was educated at East Brunswick and Thornbury state primary Schools, before becoming a clicker in a shoe factory in Collingwood, and later an official with the Victorian Boot Employees' Union, of which he was Federal President in 1944 and 1945. In 1952, was awarded a Commonwealth Bank Scholarship for six months, to study unionism and working conditions in the UK, Europe and the US. In 1954, he was elected to the Victorian Legislative Council for Melbourne North, representing the Labor Party. He left the Labor Party in 1955 and was one of only two non-Catholic parliamentary members of the Australian Labor Party (Anti-Communist), the other being Robert Joshua, who became the leader of the party in the Australian House of Representatives. John Galbally
John William Galbally, , (2 August 1910 – 8 July 1990) was a Labor Party politician. Early life Galbally was educated at St Patrick's College in East Melbourne and Melbourne High School. He graduated from the University of Melbourne with a LLB in 1931, during which time he resided at Newman College, and worked many jobs including car salesman and primary school teacher. He was a good enough Australian footballer to play in the Victorian Football League. Galbally played at the Collingwood Football Club, during one of their strongest eras, having won a record four successive premierships from 1927 to 1930. Under coach Jock McHale and captain Syd Coventry, Galbally played two seasons with the club. He made three appearances in the 1933 VFL season and four in 1934, all wins. During this period he acted as the club's solicitor and was later Collingwood's vice-president from 1951 to 1962. Likely Herman "Like" McBrien (7 December 1892 – 22 December 1956) was a leading Australian rules football administrator in the Victorian Football League (VFL) and a Victorian politician. Early life Likely McBrien was born on 7 December 1892 in South Melbourne and educated at Middle Park Central School. In 1906, he commenced work as a messenger for ''The Age'' newspaper. Public life McBrien served in World War I in a clerical capacity while based in London. Following his discharge from the services in 1917, he resumed work at ''The Age'', becoming assistant circulation manager and advertising manager. In 1922, McBrien became secretary of the Authorised News Agents' Association of Victoria, a position he held for seven years. McBrien was an avid sportsman with a variety of interests. Herbert Olney
Sir Herbert Horace Olney (26 November 1875 – 20 July 1957) was an Australian politician. He was born in Ballarat to produce merchant Charles Olney and Annie Elizabeth Capp. He attended Ballarat College and became an insurance worker, first for Manchester Fire Insurance and then for Colonial Mutual Fire Insurance. On 11 April 1898 he married Annie Lizette Trudgeon, with whom he had a daughter. He retired from insurance in 1927 and was chairman of a number of company boards. Neale Fraser
Neale Andrew Fraser (born 3 October 1933) is a former number one amateur male tennis-player from Australia, born in Melbourne, Victoria, the son of a Victorian judge. Fraser is the last man to have completed the triple crown, i.e. having won the singles, doubles and mixed doubles titles at a Grand Slam tournament, which he managed on two consecutive occasions, in 1959 and 1960 (both times at US National, now known as US Open); no male player has equalled this feat at any Grand Slam tournament since. After his playing days were over, he was non-playing captain of Australia's Davis Cup team for a record 24 years. Biography He was the son of barrister and politician Archibald Fraser.
