Archibald E. Gough
Archibald Edmond Gough (16 March 1883 – 5 March 1970) was an English footballer who played for FC Basel as a midfielder. Gough joined Basel's first team for their 1900–01 FC Basel season under captain and coach Alphonse Schorpp. After playing in two test games Gough played his domestic league debut for the club in the away game on 10 February 1901 as Basel were defeated 2–3 by Fire Flies Zürich. Between 1900 and 1902 Gough played a total of 12 games for Basel, without scoring a goal. Four of these games were in the Swiss Serie A and eight were friendly games. Gough was the first English person to play league football for the club, in fact to date he remains one of only three English players ever to play for Basel, the others being L. B. A midfielder is an outfield position in association football. Midfielders may play an exclusively defensive role, breaking up attacks, and are in that case known as defensive midfielders. 1900–01 FC Basel Season
The FC Basel 1900–01 season was their eighth season since the club's foundation on 15 November 1893. The club's new chairman was Ernst-Alfred Thalmann, who took over the presidency from Charlie Volderauer at the AGM. He was the fourth chairman in the club's history. FC Basel played their home games in the Landhof in the Quarter Kleinbasel. Overview The first national championship in Switzerland took place in 1897–98. This championship is considered as unofficial because it was not organized by the Swiss Football Association (SFA; founded in 1895). FC Basel did not participate in this first championship. Alphonse Schorpp
Alphonse Schorpp (born 5 January 1881) was a Swiss footballer who played as midfielder in the early 1900s. Schorpp joined FC Basel's first team for their 1899–1900 season. Schorpp played his first game for the club in the friendly game at home in the Landhof on 12 November 1899 as Basel won 3–1 against FC Concordia Zürich. Basel did not play in this season's domestic league. Schorpp played regularly with the team and was recorded as having played in 14 of the teams 16 games during this season. Hector Fisher
Hector Cosmo Fisher (born 4 May 1901) was an English-Swiss-Thai tennis player and footballer. Personal life Fisher was born in Myaungmya, Burma in 1901 and baptised in Bassein, Bengal, British India in August 1902. He was the son of Henry Cosmo-Fisher (1874–1918) and Annie Fisher. His father was an Anglo-Indian born in Bangalore. He had a younger brother, Colin Cosmo-Fisher (1903–1964). He was described as a cosmopolitan "Burmese-Siamese-English-Swiss" athlete. Fisher attended Oxford University, and played tennis there before he moved to Switzerland. Tennis Fisher was above all an excellent tennis player. He represented Switzerland during his tennis career and played in the Davis Cup in the years between 1931 and 1939. Fisher won the Swiss Open in Gstaad four times in 1923, 1928, 1929 and 1931.
