Archery At The 1988 Summer Olympics
Four events were contested in archery at the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul. These events included team competitions for the first time in modern Olympic archery. Men's and women's individual competitions continued to be part of the schedule as well. The format for the individual competition was altered for the first time since the 1972 Summer Olympics. In Seoul, instead of all archers using the double FITA round to determine rankings, a sort of elimination plan was introduced. Each archer shot a single FITA round to determine initial rankings. Most archers were cut from the competition after this, with only 24 advancing. These archers then shot one-fourth the number of arrows normal for a FITA round, with these scores being used to drop more archers. This process was repeated until only 8 archers finished the fourth segment of the second round. The Hwarang Archery Field is an archery field constructed between November 1985 and January 1986, and then renovated between May and August 1988. Richard Priestman
Richard John Priestman (born 16 July 1955 in Liverpool, Lancashire - now Merseyside, England) is a British archer who was a member of the British squad that won the team bronze medals at the 1988 and 1992 Summer Olympics His ex-wife Vladlena Priestman competed in archery for Great Britain at the 2000 Summer Olympics. Olympics Priestman has competed in archery at three Olympic Games. His first appearance came in 1984 in Los Angeles where he shot a score of 2339 and finished in 48th position in the individual event. At the Seoul Olympics in 1988 a new elimination format was introduced for the individual event. Kusuma Wardhani (born 20 February 1964) is a retired Indonesian archer. Together with Nurfitriyana Saiman and Lilies Handayani she won a team silver medal at the 1988 Olympics, bringing the first ever Olympic medal to Indonesia. In the 1980s, Wardhani won multiple medals in individual recurve events at the Southeast Asian Games. After retiring from competitions she headed the Education, Youth and Sports Office of Bali. Nurfitriyana Saiman-Lantang (born March 7, 1962) is a retired Indonesian archer. Together with Lilies Handayani and Kusuma Wardhani she won a team silver medal at the 1988 Olympics, bringing the first ever Olympic medal to Indonesia. She also competed in the individual and team events at the 1992 and 1996 Olympics with the best individual result of ninth place in 1988. In the 1980s, Saiman won multiple medals in individual recurve events at the Southeast Asian Games. After retiring from competitions she worked as a coach and prepared the national archery team for the 2016 Olympics. Lilies Handayani
Lilies Handayani (born 15 April 1965 in Surabaya) is an Indonesian archer who won the first ever Olympic medal for Indonesia. Together with Nurfitriyana Saiman and Kusuma Wardhani she won the silver medal in the team competition at the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul. Her career continued to soar until 2008 she stopped and focused on became a coach and managed the archery school she had pioneered before.
