Archery At The 1976 Summer Olympics
At the 1976 Summer Olympics two archery events were contested. It was the second iteration of the modern archery competition in the Olympics, following the same format as in the 1972 Summer Olympics. The two events were men's individual and women's individual, and the competition in each event consisted of a double FITA round. Archers shot a total of 288 arrows at 4 different distances (90, 70, 50, and 30 meters for men; 70, 60, 50, and 30 metres for women). Medal summary The United States repeated its sweep of the two gold medals. Japan and Italy claimed their first archery medals in the men's competition. The Soviet Union took the silver and bronze medals in the women's competition, adding to the bronze they had earned four years earlier. Olympic Archery Field, Joliette
The Olympic Archery Field, Joliette was a field located in Joliette, Quebec. Approved in 1974 by the International Archery Federation (FITA) for use, it hosted the archery competitions for the 1976 Summer Olympics. The site is still in use today. Darrell Pace
Darrell Owen Pace (born October 23, 1956) is a former archer from the United States, who won two individual Olympic and World Championships titles each during his career. In 2011, as part of the World Archery Federation's 80th anniversary celebration, he was declared as by the WAF as "Archer of the Century" Career Three years after taking up the sport, Pace, at the age of 16, became the youngest member of the U. S. team at the archery world championships, where he finished twenty-third. Pace went on to win four consecutive national archery championships, from 1973 through 1976. He also won the title in 1978 and 1980. He won the world title in 1975 and 1979 and finished second to long-time rival Richard McKinney in 1983. Archery at the 1972 Summer Olympics consisted of two medal events, one for men and one for women. Each event was composed of two FITA rounds. Each of those FITA rounds consisted of the archers shooting 36 arrows at targets at 4 different distances, for a total of 144 arrows.
