The Archdeacon of St Asaph is the priest in charge of the archdeaconry of St Asaph, an administrative division of the Church in Wales Diocese of St Asaph. Archdeacon
An archdeacon is a senior clergy position in the Church of the East, Chaldean Catholic Church, Syriac Orthodox Church, Anglican Communion, St Thomas Christians, Eastern Orthodox churches and some other Christian denominations, above that of most clergy and below a bishop. In the High Middle Ages it was the most senior diocesan position below a bishop in the Catholic Church. An archdeacon is often responsible for administration within an archdeaconry, which is the principal subdivision of the diocese. The ''Oxford Dictionary of the Christian Church'' has defined an archdeacon as "A cleric having a defined administrative authority delegated to him by the bishop in the whole or part of the diocese.". The office has often been described metaphorically as that of ''oculus episcopi'', the "bishop's eye". John Lomas (bishop)
John Derrick Percy Lomas (born 19 August 1958) is an Anglican bishop in Wales, serving as the Bishop of Swansea and Brecon since 2021. Education He was educated at St Michael's College, Llandaff. After serving as Archdeacon of Wrexham since October 2018, it announced on 4 November 2021 that Lomas had been elected to serve as the next Bishop of Swansea and Brecon. He legally took up his see when his election was confirmed at a Sacred Synod for that purpose on 22 November 2021; he was later consecrated into bishop's orders by Andy John, the new Archbishop of Wales (who had first to be elected by the Electoral College, which included all six bishops, including Lomas). Lomas was consecrated a bishop on 26 February 2022, by Andy John, Archbishop of Wales and Bishop of Bangor, at Bangor Cathedral. Chris Potter (priest)
Christopher Nicholas Lynden Potter is a retired Anglican priest. Potter was born on 4 October 1949, educated at Haileybury and the University of Leeds and ordained in 1993 after an earlier career as a furniture designer and cabinet maker. He began his ordained ministry as a curate in Flint, after which he was vicar of the grouped parishes of Llanfair DC, Llanelidan, Efenechtyd and Derwen, a post he held until his appointment as Dean of Asaph. Bernard Thomas
The Ven. Elwyn Bernard Thomas B.Sc., BD, was an Archdeacon of St Asaph in the Church in Wales Diocese of St Asaph. John Davies (bishop Of St Asaph)
John Stewart Davies (born 28 February 1943) was Bishop of St Asaph from 1999 until 2008. Davies was educated at St. John's School, Leatherhead. After a career in Journalism, he read Hebrew at University College of North Wales (1968-1972); and at Queens' College, Cambridge (1972-1974), he wrote an MLitt thesis on ‘Form and Tradition of the Prophetic Call Narratives’ (awarded 1975). After study at Wescott House, he was ordained Deacon in 1974 (at Llanrhaeadr-yng-Nghinmeirch parish church) and ordained Priest in 1975 (at St Asaph Cathedral) by the Bishop of St Asaph, Harold John Charles. He began his service in the Church in Wales at Hawarden. Richard Owen (priest)
The Ven. Richard Henry Owen was Archdeacon of St Asaph from 1964 to 1970. He was born in 1899 and educated at the University of Wales and ordained in 1921. He began his career as a Curate in Colwyn Bay. After this he held incumbencies at Llantysilio, Bangor-on-Dee, Rhosymedre and Prestatyn, and finally St John's Church, Trofarth. The Ven. Richard Henry Roberts (23 April 1884 – 6 July 1970) was a British Anglican clergyman in the Church in Wales who served as Archdeacon of St Asaph from 1942 to 1959. He was born in Brynamman, Glamorgan, and educated at Keble College, Oxford, and ordained in 1908. He held incumbencies at Llangennech, Betws with Ammanford and Rhyl before his appointment as Archdeacon.
