Archbishop Of Montevideo
The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Montevideo ( la, Archidioecesis Montisvidei) is an archdiocese of the Latin Church of the Roman Catholic church in Uruguay. History Erected as the Apostolic Vicariate of Montevideo by Pope Gregory XVI on 14 August 1832, the vicariate was promoted to the Diocese of Montevideo on 13 July 1878 by Pope Leo XIII. It was elevated to the rank of a metropolitan archdiocese on 14 April 1897. The new archdiocese became the Metropolitan of the suffragan sees: Canelones, Florida, Maldonado–Punta del Este, Melo, Mercedes, Minas, Salto, San José de Mayo, Tacuarembó. Montevideo is the only archdiocese in Uruguay and its archbishop is thus seen as leader of the Uruguayan Church. The archdiocese's mother church and thus seat of its archbishop is the Montevideo Metropolitan Cathedral. The Roman Catholic Diocese of Maldonado-Punta del Este-Minas ( la, Dioecesis Maldonadensis-Orientalis Orae-Fodinensis) is a diocese of the Latin Church of the Roman Catholic church in Uruguay. It was the Diocese of Maldonado-Punta del Este until, on March 2, 2020, the Diocese of Minas was united with it. History The diocese was erected in 1966, from the Diocese of Minas and is a suffragan of the Archdiocese of Montevideo. This diocese covers almost all the Department of Maldonado and the southern half of the Department of Rocha. Its see is at the Cathedral of Maldonado. The Salesians of Don Bosco (SDB), formally known as the Society of Saint Francis de Sales (), is a religious congregation of men in the Catholic Church, founded in the late 19th century by Italian priest Saint John Bosco to help poor children during the Industrial Revolution. The congregation was named after Saint Francis de Sales, a 17th-century bishop of Geneva. Daniel Sturla
Daniel Fernando Sturla Berhouet, SDB (born 4 July 1959 in Montevideo) is a Uruguayan Roman Catholic prelate and the archbishop of Montevideo. Biography Sturla was born in a Uruguayan middle-class family. His parents died when he was a teenager. His eldest brother Martín was an important politician at the end of the 20th century. He attended John XXIII Institute run by the Salesians of Don Bosco, in Montevideo. He entered the Salesian novitiate in 1979 and made his first religious profession on January 31, 1980. He studied theology at what was then called the Bishop Mariano Soler Theological Institute of Uruguay, and on November 21, 1987, he was ordained a priest. After his ordination he served as vicar of the Salesian novitiate and postnovitiate, director of the Salesian aspirantate, master of novices, director of the John XXIII Institute, and professor of Church history.
