Arcade (Marvel Comics)
Arcade is a supervillain appearing in American comic books published by Marvel Comics. He first appeared in 1978's ''Marvel Team-Up'' #65, the creation of writer Chris Claremont and writer/artist John Byrne. The character is a combination of an evil genius and a hitman who carries out his assassinations via various elaborate traps, often referred to as '' Murderworld''. Arcade's first intended victims were Spider-Man and Captain Britain but since Arcade's ''Murderworld'' games always leave the outcome up to chance, the duo defeated Arcade and escaped with their lives. Over the years Arcade has targeted a multitude of Marvel heroes, often focusing on the X-Men and associated members of X-Factor, X-Force and Excalibur. X-Factor (comics)
''X-Factor'' is an American comic book series published by Marvel Comics. It is a spin-off from the popular X-Men franchise, featuring characters from X-Men stories. The series has been relaunched several times with different team rosters, most recently as '' X-Factor (2020),'' written by Leah Williams. ''X-Factor'' launched in 1986, featuring the five original X-Men reorganizing as a group in response to the seeming outlaw status of the then-current X-Men team of whom Magneto was a member. In 1991, the founding members were incorporated back into the regular ''X-Men'' series, and ''X-Factor'' relaunched as a U.S. government-sponsored team incorporating many secondary characters from the X-Men mythos. The series was canceled in 1998 after 149 issues. The 2005 ''X-Factor'' series followed the mutant detective agency X-Factor Investigations. Excalibur (comics)
Excalibur is a fictional superhero group appearing in American comic books published by Marvel Comics. They are depicted as an offshoot of the X-Men, usually based in the United Kingdom. Conceived by writer Chris Claremont and artist/co-writer Alan Davis, they first appeared in ''Excalibur Special Edition'' #1 (1987), also known as ''Excalibur: The Sword is Drawn''. Stories involving this team have featured elements of both the X-Men and Captain Britain franchises, frequently involving cross- dimensional travel. The initial Excalibur roster, which was featured in the first eponymous series from 1988 to 1998, consisted of original Captain Britain Brian Braddock and his lover Meggan, along with three former members of the X-Men: Kitty Pryde, Nightcrawler, and Rachel Summers. A new iteration of the team was featured in the 2005 series ''New Excalibur'' until the title was replaced in 2008 by ''Captain Britain and MI13''. ''Spider-Man Comics Weekly'' was a Marvel UK publication which primarily published black-and-white reprints of American Marvel four-color Spider-Man stories. Marvel UK's second-ever title, ''Spider-Man Comics Weekly'' debuted in 1973, initially publishing "classic" 1960s ''Spider-Man'' stories (as well as ''Thor'' backup stories). The title proved to be a great success. Along with Marvel UK's flagship title, '' The Mighty World of Marvel'', ''Spider-Man Comics Weekly'' helped Marvel gain a foothold in the (at the time) vast UK weekly comic market, allowing the company to cross-market and later introduce non-superhero UK-reprint titles such as ''Planet of the Apes'' and ''Star Wars''. Although it changed its title name several times over the years (mostly due to other less successful Marvel UK comics merging with it), the Spider-Man weekly comic eventually became the longest-running Marvel UK publication, publishing 666 issues from 1973 to 1985. Marvel UK
Marvel UK was an imprint of Marvel Comics formed in 1972 to reprint US-produced stories for the British weekly comic market. Marvel UK later produced original material by British creators such as Alan Moore, John Wagner, Dave Gibbons, Steve Dillon, and Grant Morrison. There were a number of editors in charge of overseeing the UK editions. Although based in the United States, Tony Isabella oversaw the establishment of Marvel UK. He was succeeded by UK-based editors Peter L. Skingley (a.k.a. Peter Allan) and then Matt Softly – both of whom were women who adopted male pen names for the job (in reality, they were Petra Skingley and Maureen Softly). They were then replaced by Neil Tennant, who later found fame with the pop group the Pet Shop Boys. Nick Laing succeeded him, but with a turbulent market and falling sales, Laing was let go and Dez Skinn took over.
