Aransas County Independent School District is an independent county-wide school district based in Rockport, Texas, United States. The district serves a area that covers most of Aransas County, including the city of Rockport, the town of Fulton, and the unincorporated communities of Holiday Beach and Lamar. History The first public school in Aransas County was instituted in 1884 where the Rockport city water tower once stood. In 1886 a one-room school house was built in Fulton. A one-room school at Sparks Colony followed. The school met in various places and land was sought for the location of a permanent building to house the school. The land was purchased and the building completed in 1892. It was constructed at the site of present-day Rockport Elementary. On May 17, 1907, four girls and two boys graduated from the Rockport High School in a ceremony held at the Bailey Pavilion, built over the water across from where the Wells Fargo Bank now stands. Fulton, Texas
Fulton is a town in Aransas County, Texas, United States. As of the 2010 census, this South Texas coastal fishing community had a population of 1,358. The town is named for George Ware Fulton, a land developer in the area. History Fulton was founded in 1866, and named by George Ware Fulton, Sr., whose wife Harriet Smith Fulton inherited on the northern end of the Live Oak Peninsula, including the area where Mr. Fulton created the town he named for himself. Fulton had been a teacher in Indiana and decided to come to Texas by flatboat with 60 other men during the war for independence between Texas and Mexico. After the long trip to Texas, George Fulton found that the war was over but he joined the Army of the Republic of Texas for a few months. He worked for Henry Smith, the first Governor of Texas, and married Smith's daughter, Harriet. Rockport-Fulton High School
Rockport-Fulton High School is a public high school in Rockport, Texas, United States, located on the Texas Gulf Coast. It is the only high school in the Aransas County Independent School District and classified as a 4A school by the UIL. In 2019, the school was rated as a "B" by the Texas Education Agency. Parts of the school collapsed in August 2017 due to Hurricane Harvey. Its new gymnasium, built for $1 million donated by Ellen DeGeneres and Lowe's Home Improvement, has a capacity of 1,000 and opened in the fall of September 2019. Lamar, Texas
Lamar is a small, unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) in Aransas County, Texas, United States, north of Rockport and north of Corpus Christi. As of the 2010 census it had a population of 636. The community was named for Mirabeau B. Lamar, the second president of the Republic of Texas. This was a new CDP for the 2010 census. Lamar was founded in 1839 at Lookout Point, on the channel entrance to Copano Bay. President Lamar agreed to relocate the custom house here, and the town thrived as a port and the site of a salt works. This prosperity ended abruptly on February 11, 1864, when the town was bombarded and practically obliterated by the Union Navy. For most of the 20th century the population was less than 200, but by the 2010 census it was over 600. The restored cemetery is a Texas historical landmark. Goose Island State Park is within the CDP. Holiday Beach is an unincorporated community and census-designated place in Aransas County, Texas, United States. As of the 2010 census it had a population of 514. This was a new CDP for the 2010 census. Geography Holiday Beach is located at (28.167125, -97.008001). It is situated on the eastern shore of Copano Bay along State Highway 35 in Aransas County, approximately northeast of Rockport. Aransas County ( ) is a county located in the U.S. state of Texas. It is in South Texas and its county seat is Rockport. As of the 2020 census, the population was 23,830. Aransas County is part of the Corpus Christi Metropolitan Statistical Area.
