Apsana Begum ( bn, আফসানা বেগম; born 25 May 1990) is a British Labour Party (UK), Labour Party politician serving as the Member of Parliament (United Kingdom), Member of Parliament (MP) for Poplar and Limehouse (UK Parliament constituency), Poplar and Limehouse since 2019 United Kingdom general election, 2019. She is Parliament's first Hijab, hijab-wearing MP. Early life and career Begum was born in Shadwell, London Borough of Tower Hamlets, Tower Hamlets to Bengali Muslim parents Manir Uddin Ahmed and Syeda Nazma Begom. She has five sisters and a brother. Her ancestral home is in Ludorpur village of Jagannathpur Upazila, Jagannathpur, Sunamganj District, Bangladesh. In modern usage, hijab ( ar, حجاب, translit=ḥijāb, ) generally refers to headcoverings worn by Muslim women. Many Muslims believe it is obligatory for every female Muslim who has reached the age of puberty to wear a head covering.
